Organizations Filed Purposes: New River Humane Society is passionately dedicated to serving the needs of community members animals in Fayette County beyond. Controlling the pet population through spay/neuter programs, ensuring all animals are treated with dignity, respect free from abuse finding safe loving homes for pets who come into our care at Animal Control Center

The New River Humane Society, Inc. manages operates the Fayette County Animal Shelter and directly oversees a spay/ neuter program.

New River Humane Society served 1,127 cats kittens and 886 dogs and puppies at Fayette County Animal Control Center during 2020 a 16 increase from 2019. Approximately half the pets brought in were strays abandoned pets, while others were surrended by owners or seized by law enforcement in neglect abuse cases. During the Covid-19 pandemic, our staff, volunteers supporters made it possible for us to remain a NO-KILL shelter continue to provide the very best care for each animal. Less than 10 animals had to ultimately be euthanized due to severe illness or injury, over 1700 animals were transferred to reputable no-kill resue partners, 185 placed in local homes and over 100 reclaimed by their owners.

The Low-Cost Spay/Neuter prgoram provided financial assistance for 305 dog owners and 398 cats owners in our communities to have their pets spayed or neutered. New River Humane Society is dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted and unplanned litters. Pet owners complete an application and make a donation in order to receive a voucher which can be used a participating local vet. This program is possible due to donations and grants. We also work to reduce the feral cat population in our county by partnering with Fayette Veterinary Hospital in a Community Cat Sterilization Program. The vet offers special weeks during the winter when they accept feral cats from the community, we assisted in getting 32 commnity cats spayed or netuered.

During year-end 2020, New River Humane Society transported 703 dogs puppies and 998 cats and kittens to safety with our Rescue Transport Program. This program relies sole on voluteers to network with nearly 20 reputable rescue partners in VA, MD, PA, NY and WV. Volunteers coordinate vetting animals and scheduling transport dates. A team of 11 volunteer drivers averaged 2,600 miles per month transporting these pets to rescue. Without this program and these partnerships, our organization would not be able to remain a no-kill shelter for our community.
