Organizations Filed Purposes:
FORWARD WYOMING IS A NONPARTISAN, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO EDUCATING, TRAINING, AND ENGAGING A NEW GENERATION OF ACTIVE CITIZENS AND YOUNG LEADERS. FORWARD WYOMING STRIVES TO EDUCATE THE GENERAL PUBLIC ON ISSUES OF PRESSING CONCERN.
FORWARD WYOMING GRASSROOTS INSTITUTE: THIS IS THE PRIMARY ACTIVITY OF FORWARD WYOMING. THE INSTITUTE IS A FREE, 10-WEEK, COMMUNITY ORGANIZING PROGRAM THAT AIMS TO PROMOTE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP AMONGST THE YOUNG PEOPLE AND VARIOUS COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO APPLY. THE GRASSROOTS INSTITUTE IS THE ONLY ONE IN WYOMING OF ITS KIND. THE PROGRAM MIXES CLASSROOM LECTURE AND DISCUSSION WITH REAL-WORLD SKILLS NEEDED BY ORGANIZERS, SUCH AS DIRECT VOTER CONTACT EXPERIENCE, VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT SKILLS, NON-PROFIT ADVOCACY AND ENGAGEMENT, AND A DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF LOCAL ISSUES. FORWARD WYOMING CONTINUED TO CONDUCT THE GRASSROOTS INSTITUTE IN 2017. INSTITUTE STUDENTS, UPON GRADUATION, WERE ALSO ABLE TO APPLY THEIR NEWLY LEARNED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE TO PARTICIPATE IN FORWARD WYOMING'S OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES THAT DIRECTLY SERVED THE COMMUNITY. THE CURRICULUM FOR THE INSTITUTE CONTINUES TO EVOLVE FROM PREVIOUS ITERATIONS TO IMPROVE UPON WHAT WE ARE PROVIDING TO THE COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY AS WE CONTINUE TO STRIVE TO BRING THE PROGRAM TO ADDITIONAL COMMUNITIES ACROSS WYOMING. FORWARD WYOMING STRIVES TO CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE AND EXPAND AND DOES SO, IN PART, DUE TO OUR INCREASED COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL EXPERTS AND ORGANIZATIONS IN RESEARCHING NEW AND RELEVANT MATERIAL IN ORDER TO REFOCUS TRAININGS AND CURRICULUM TO REFLECT THE MOST CURRENT NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY.
WYWEVOTE - COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND COMMIT TO VOTE CARD PROGRAM: IN 2017, FORWARD WYOMING CONTINUED ONE OF ITS MAJOR CORNERSTONE MISSIONS TO ENGAGE AND EDUCATE CITIZENS ON IMPORTANT ISSUES AFFECTING THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES. ISSUES INCLUDE: MINIMUM WAGE, THE GENDER WAGE GAP, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT LAWS, KEEPING PUBLIC LANDS IN PUBLIC HANDS AND EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION. FORWARD WYOMING INTERACTED WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS. ADDITIONALLY, WE BEGAN DEVELOPMENT OF THE WYWEVOTE PROGRAM, AN EXTENSION AND REBRANDING OF THE PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF OUR COMMIT- TO-VOTE CARD PROGRAM. BASED OFF PAST EXPERIENCE, WE BUILT A FOUNDATION FOR THE PROGRAM TO SCALE UP IN SIZE AND CAPACITY IN FUTURE YEAR SO THAT WE COULD PROVIDE MORE RESOURCES TO YOUNG VOTERS. DISCUSSIONS WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS, YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAD NEVER VOTED, CAMPUS GROUPS, AND NATIONAL GRASSROOTS NON-PROFITS HELPED US CRAFT A VIBRANT NARRATIVE AIMED AT ENGAGING THE YOUTH OF WYOMING TO GET BALLOT-EDUCATED AND TURN OUT TO VOTE. HAVING HEARD ABOUT THE OBSTACLES YOUNG COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE FACING WHEN IT COMES TO VOTING, THE GOAL WAS TO HELP OVERCOME THE CHALLENGES OF PARTICIPATING IN DEMOCRACY.
MEDIA FOCUSED VOTER EDUCATION: IN 2017, FORWARD WYOMING EXPANDED UPON OUR PREVIOUS WORK OF INFORMING AND ENGAGING WYOMINGITES THROUGH BETTER MEDIA COVERAGE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS. FORWARD WYOMING REPORTED ON PUBLIC AFFAIRS, CONDUCTED INTERVIEWS PROVIDED OPINIONS AND GAVE PEOPLE THE MEANS TO INTERACT WITH THEIR ELECTED OFFICIALS IN ORDER TO ENHANCE WYOMINGITES' KNOWLEDGE OF ISSUES AND THEIR REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT. THIS EFFORT COMPLEMENTS OUR ON-THE-GROUND ORGANIZING EFFORTS BY PROVIDING STATEWIDE COMMUNICATIONS AROUND ISSUES THAT REINFORCE THE FOCUS OF OUR VOTER MOBILIZATION, SUCH AS INCREASING THE MINIMUM WAGE, CLOSING THE GENDER WAGE GAP, IMPROVING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT LAWS, KEEPING PUBLIC LANDS IN PUBLIC HANDS AND INCREASED FUNDING FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION. THIS COMMUNICATION WORK SERVED TO EDUCATE LOCAL VOTERS ABOUT ISSUES THAT FORM THE FOUNDATION OF WYOMING COMMUNITIES. WITH MORE UNDERSTANDING AND WAYS TO GET INVOLVED IN THE TOPICS THAT DRIVE THE POLITICAL DISCOURSE IN THE STATE, THE LIKELIHOOD INCREASED THAT PEOPLE WOULD INTERACT WITH FORWARD WYOMING ORGANIZERS AND THEREFORE BE MORE MOTIVATED TO VOTE. THIS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN FORWARD WYOMING'S VOTER MOBILIZATION PROJECTS BY EXPANDING THE SCOPE AND REACH OF THESE EDUCATIONAL FORMS OF COMMUNICATION.
