THE LARAMIE PLAINS MUSEUM IS AN HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM COMPLEX, OF THE CITY OF LARAMIE, WYOMING AND THE SURROUNDING AREA, WHOSE MISSION IS TO PRESERVE, RESTORE, AUGMENT AND EXHIBIT ITS HISTORIC BUILDINGS, GROUNDS AND THE HISTORIC COLLECTIONS CONTAINED THEREIN, THEREBY INCREASING PUBLIC APPRECIATION AND EDUCATION ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE HUMAN HERITAGE OF THE AREA THROUGH GUIDED TOURS, EXHIBITIONS, PUBLICATIONS AND SPECIAL EVENTS.
THE LARAMIE PLAINS MUSEUM, ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES, IS SITUATED ON A FULL SQUARE BLOCK IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT OF LARAMIE, WYOMING, AND CONSISTS OF THE RESTORED 1892 IVINSON MANSION AND ITS CARRIAGE HOUSE, THE ALICE HARDIE STEVENS CENTER RECEPTION HALL/CURATORIAL ACCESSIONING AREA, AND THE MARSHALL ONE-ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE. THE MUSEUM ALSO OWNS AN 1883 HISTORIC STONE STABLE, CURRENTLY CONFIGURED AS A 2 UNIT COMPLEX, AND A BRICK RESIDENCE IN THE BLOCK IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF THE MUSEUM. THE MUSEUM'S EXTENSIVE COLLECTION INCLUDES PERIOD HOME FURNISHINGS, TEXTILES, ORIGINAL ARTWORK, MORE THAN 17,000 LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHS, AND OVER 32,000 ARTIFACTS AND ITEMS OF HISTORIC VALUE TO THE AREA.
(CONTINUATION OF 4A) CLOSE TO 7,100 PEOPLE, FROM THROUGHOUT THE NATION AND 40 COUNTRIES, VISIT AND LEARN FROM THE MUSEUM COLLECTIONS ANNUALLY, INCLUDING MORE THAN 790 STUDENTS FROM THE LARAMIE AREA AND AROUND THE STATE AND REGION VIA EDUCATIONAL TOURS AND YOUTH VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS. ANNUALLY, NEARLY 29,000 PEOPLE EXPERIENCE THE HISTORIC PROPERTY THROUGH TOURS, USE OF RENTAL FACILITIES AND SPECIAL EVENTS HELD ON THE MUSEUM GROUNDS. AS AN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY, LPM SERVES A WIDE VARIETY OF POPULATIONS OF ALL AGES, INCLUDING LOW TO MODERATE INCOME, OFFERING NO-COST TOURS TO STUDENT AND SPECIAL NEEDS VISITORS, AND DISCOUNTED TOURS OF THE MUSEUM SO THAT ALL MAY ENJOY AND LEARN THE HISTORY IT CONTAINS.
THE LARAMIE PLAINS MUSEUM HOLDS A SIGNIFICANT YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM EVERY SUMMER, ENGAGING 20 TO 40 STUDENTS, AGES 12 TO 15, IN ITS INNOVATIVE JUNIOR DOCENT PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM IS AN EDUCATIONAL, CONFIDENCE BOOSTING ENDEAVOR FOR JUNIOR HIGH-AGED STUDENTS AS THEY ARE TAUGHT TO SPEAK WELL ABOUT THE HISTORY OF OUR AREA, TO RESPOND PROFESSIONALLY IN A WORK ENVIRONMENT, AND TO INTERACT CONFIDENTLY WITH THE PUBLIC, AS TOUR GUIDES FOR LARAMIE PLAINS MUSEUM'S HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM/CARRIAGE HOUSE AND THE ONE-ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE. VICTORIAN TEAS, EVENING AT THE IVINSONS, AND THE SPECIAL HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE ARE ALSO COMMUNITY ATTRACTIONS THAT ARE HELD AT THE MUSEUM EACH YEAR.
