YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (YWCA) OF SWEETWATER COUNTY IS DEDICATED TO ELIMINATING RACISM, EMPOWERING WOMEN, AND PROMOTING PEACE, JUSTICE, FREEDOM AND DIGNITY FOR ALL.
THE YWCA EARLY CARE AND LEARNING CENTER IN ROCK SPRINGS PROVIDES QUALITY, DEPENDABLE CHILDCARE TO AN AVERAGE OF ONE HUNDRED CHILDREN PER DAY FROM BIRTH TO AGE TWELVE. THE ORIGINAL CENTER OPENED IN 1977. IN 2009, A SEPARATE INFANT AND TODDLER CENTER WAS BUILT. CHILDREN LEARN FROM A DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE CURRICULUM WHILE PARENTS ARE ABLE TO WORK OR GO TO SCHOOL. THE CENTER FOCUSES ON SCHOOL READINESS AND AGE-APPROPRIATE EXPERIENCES TO PREPARE THE CHILDREN FOR THEIR FUTURE. THE YWCA PROVIDED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO 58 CHILDREN WHOSE PARENTS INCOME QUALIFIES AND WOULD NOT OTHERWISE BE ABLE TO AFFORD QUALITY CHILDCARE. THE YWCA HOSTS A SUMMER DAY CAMP FOR SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN. OVER THE DURATION OF THE SUMMER, APPROXIMATELY 22 CHILDREN ATTENDED THEPROGRAM ALLOWING PARENTS TO CONTINUE WORKING OR ATTENDING SCHOOL, KNOWING THEIR CHILDREN WERE IN A SAFE, NURTURING ENVIRONMENT AND PARTICIPATING IN AGE-APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES.
THE YWCA CENTER FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN PROVIDES SERVICES TO VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, STALKING, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, OR ELDER ABUSE. THE PROGRAM HAS TWO OFFICES, ONE LOCATED IN ROCK SPRINGS AND ONE IN GREEN RIVER, AND AN EMERGENCY SHELTER THAT PROVIDES SAFE, TEMPORARY SHELTER FOR VICTIMS IN NEED. THE SHELTER IS PET FRIENDLY, ALLOWING VICTIMS TO BRING IN THEIR DOG/CAT TO ENSURE THE ANIMAL'S SAFETY AS WELL. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES A TWENTY-FOUR-HOUR CRISIS LINE AND ADVOCATES THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO VICTIMS OF THESE CRIMES IN AND AROUND SWEETWATER COUNTY. ADVOCATES TAKE CRISIS CALLS BY PHONE OR MAY RESPOND TO THE HOSPITAL, LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES OR OTHER COUNTY AGENCIES TO PROVIDE IMMEDIATE CRISIS INTERVENTION SERVICES. ADVOCATES ALSO RESPOND TO CALLS FROM LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT REQUESTING AN ADVOCATE TO RESPOND TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS' HOMES. VICTIMS ARE ABLE TO HAVE THEIR QUESTIONS ANSWERED AND SERVICES OFFERED IMMEDIATELY. ADVOCATES ALSO MAY ASSIST WITH PROTECTION ORDERS, CASE MANAGEMENT, HOUSING, EMPLOYMENT, FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, AND MORE. ADVOCATES MAY ALSO WORK WITH CHILDREN WHO ARE PRESENT AND HAVE WITNESSED VIOLENCE IN THEIR HOME. THE PROGRAM PROVIDED 13,901 SERVICES TO 357 INDIVIDUALS IN 2019. THERE WERE 1,403 CRISIS CALLS AND 1,224 SHELTER NIGHTS PROVIDED.
THE FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM (FE) HAS BEEN IN PLACE FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS. THE 2019-2020 FISCAL YEAR SERVED 132 CLIENTS IN TOTAL. FE MADE A CHANGE TO ITS PROGRAM BY COLLECTING BASIC DEMOGRAPHICS ON CLIENTS WHO COMPLETED THE WHOLE CLASS AND CLIENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN GROUP SESSIONS. OF THE CLIENTS WHO COMPLETED THE ENTIRE COURSE, 93% WERE WOMEN. 77% OF CLIENTS WERE BETWEEN 18 AND 49 YEARS OF AGE. 55% OF CLIENTS WERE SINGLE-PARENT FEMALES. 24% OF CLIENTS WERE DISABLED, 3% CARED FOR A FAMILY MEMBER ON DISABILITY, AND 2% WERE VETERANS. ACCORDING TO WYOMING'S LIVING WAGE CALCULATION, 67% OF CLIENTS WERE LIVING IN POVERTY, WHILE 8% WERE EARNING A LIVABLE WAGE. OF THE 65 CLIENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN A GROUP PRESENTATION, 47% WERE MALE, AND 53% WERE FEMALE. 52% OF THE CLIENTS WERE TEENAGERS, 18% WERE BETWEEN 18 AND 25 YEARS OLD, AND 25% WERE BETWEEN 26 AND 49. CLIENTS CAN TAKE THE CLASS ON-SITE, OR THE INSTRUCTOR CAN COME TO THEM. THE CLASS TIME LASTS APPROXIMATELY THREE HOURS, DEPENDING ON THE CLIENT'S NEEDS. THEY CAN BE TAKEN IN ONE SITTING OR SPLIT UP INTO MULTIPLE SESSIONS FOR THE CLIENT'S CONVENIENCE. EACH PARTICIPANT IS PROVIDED WITH A WORKBOOK TO FOLLOW ALONG WITH THROUGHOUT THE COURSE. THIS WORKBOOK TEACHES PARTICIPANTS HOW TO BUDGET, BOTH IMMEDIATELY AND IN THE LONG TERM. AFTER COMPLETING THE CLASS, THE CLIENT RECEIVES A $25 GIFT CARD TO HELP THEM ON THEIR WAY TO FINANCIAL SUCCESS.
