Organizations Filed Purposes: THE BEAUFORT COUNTY OPEN LAND TRUST PROTECTS SIGNIFICANT ECOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL PLACES THAT DEFINE THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE WHILE CONTRIBUTING TO THE HEALTH AND SPIRIT OF THE EXTRAORDINARY LOWCOUNTRY REGION.

LAND PROTECTION AND STEWARDSHIPTHE BEAUFORT COUNTY OPEN LAND TRUST (OLT) ENTERED A NEW PHASE OF ITS ORGANIZATIONAL JOURNEY IN 2019 UNDER ITS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S LEADERSHIP. THE OPEN LAND TRUST ACCEPTED TWO CONSERVATION EASEMENTS IN 2019, ONE ON 634 ACRES OF HISTORIC FARMLAND IN NORTHERN BEAUFORT COUNTY, NOW HOME TO A SOLAR ENERGY GENERATION FACILITY. THIS CONSERVATION EASEMENT WAS THE FIRST IN SOUTH CAROLINA ON A SOLAR FACILITY, DEMONSTRATING COLLABORATIVE CONSERVATION AND COMMITMENT TO GREEN ENERGY PRODUCTION. OLT'S PROTECTED ACREAGE NOW TOTALS 24,662 ACRES WITH 88 CONSERVATION EASEMENTS AND 51 FEE PROPERTIES. THE OLT STEWARDS AND MAINTAINS ICONIC PUBLIC VIEWSHEDS AND GREENSPACE/OPEN SPACE IN ADDITION TO ECOLOGICALLY SENSITIVE LANDS AND UNDEVELOPED MARSH ISLAND IN SIX COUNTIES. ALL CONSERVATION EASEMENTS AND FEE-OWNED PROPERTIES ARE MONITORED ANNUALLY TO ENSURE THE PROTECTION OF EACH PROPERTY'S CONSERVATION VALUES.

BEAUFORT COUNTY'S RURAL & CRITICAL LANDS PRESERVATION PROGRAM OLT CONTINUED PROVIDING LAND ACQUISITION CONSULTING SERVICES FOR BEAUFORT COUNTY'S RURAL AND CRITICAL LAND PRESERVATION PROGRAM FOR THE 11TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR. OLT STAFF CONSIDERED 54 NEW PROPERTIES IN ADDITION TO EIGH HOLDOVER (2018) POTENTIAL PROPERTIES IN 2019. TWO PROJECTS WERE APPROVED FOR PURCHASE BY COUNTY COUNCIL, THE 54-ACRE BAILEY MEMORIAL PARK, SLATED TO BE A PASSIVE PARK NEAR THE TOWN OF BLUFFTON, AND PINEVIEW, 108 ACRES ON LADY'S ISLAND, ALSO A FUTURE PASSIVE PARK. PROTECTED ACREAGE FOR THE PROGRAM NOW TOTALS 23,980 ACRES THROUGH 115 PURCHASE OR PURCHASE-OF-DEVELOPMENT RIGHTS PROJECTS. THE RURAL AND CRITICAL PRESERVATION PROGRAM IS NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AS A MODEL FOR LOCALLY FUNDED BALLOT MEASURE PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT LAND CONSERVATION AND IS USED TO LEVERAGE FEDERAL AND STATE FUNDING SOURCES.
