WILDERNESS STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM aka Wild Stew or WS This program is dedicated to restoring maintaining conditions in wilderness areas on public lands across Arizona to preserve ecological integrity improve visitor experience in primitive outdoor settings. Arizona has 90 designated wilderness areas agency resources are insufficent to address needs such as trail maintenance, erosion control, removal of invasive species installation of signage. AWCs Wild Stew program assists public lands management agencies with addressing these needs. Wild Stew coordinates a corps of nearly 200 volunteers to conduct stewardship projects primarily on lands of the Forest Service Bureau of Land Management, with 14 projects completed with the help of 106 volunteers in FY 2018. Projects were completed in the Chiricahua, Superstition, Kachina Peaks, Woodchute, Four Peaks and Granite Mountain wilderness areas. Stewardship projects improved or maintained 11 miles of trail, installed 30 erosion check dams, removed 29 downed logs obstructing trails and improved three acres of habitat.

LAND OF LEGENDS PRESERVATION INITIATIVE During FY 2018, AWC partnered with the BLM to develop a unique outdoor environmental education event for the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area SPRNCA, to raise awareness of the important values of the San Pedro River and of national conservation areas in general. The event, Seek the San Pedro, was held on National Public Lands Day in September 2017. Partners included multiple conservation organizations, four federal agencies, local schools, state agencies and other key community interests. Children were bussed in from Palominas Elementary School, and additional families and adults attended. Arizonas rich natural and cultural history was underscored by presentations from two nationally recognized authors, who spoke about Arizonas wild treasures and the role of women and girls in Arizona history.

CITIZEN WILDERNESS INVENTORY In this fiscal year, AWC continued an extensive, multi-year effort to survey public lands in Arizona for wilderness resources. Little citizen wilderness inventory had occurred since the 1980s, and since that time, public lands have seen significant change. AWC began intensive wilderness inventory surveys in 2015, and during FY 2018 we completed 15 additional proposals for Lands with Wilderness Characteristics LWC in northwestern southeastern Arizona, bringing the current total to 43 LWC proposals. The proposals were formally presented to the BLM. Current inventories of wilderness-quality lands are critical to informing agencies of wilderness-quality lands that need protection as agencies revise land management plans propose actions that affect these lands.
