AYM provides supervised after-school programming for teens in middle and high school. Teens can study, connect with staff/mentors, and participate in special events and life-skills training including personal finance, physical fitness and nutrition, meal planning/preparation, resume completion/job search and interview skills, SAT prep/college search, and more. In-person, indoor programming was suspended for the last three quarters of 2020 due to COVID; staff worked diligently to stay connected to students via technology.
Apache Youth Ministries (AYM) works with at-risk teens from the White Mountain Apache Tribe (WMAT) on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, helping them to overcome adversity through faith-based programming, mentoring, and life-skills training.
To provide a safe space for at-risk students to meet, study, connect with mentors, and receive life-skills training, AYM leases space on the reservation from the White Mountain Apache Tribe. Our largest non-payroll program-related expense is rent and utilities for this location, which WMAT continued to collect from the ministry throughout 2020 despite almost complete cessation of programming through the final three quarters of the year.
Generally, food for our students is the second largest non-payroll program expense; however, due to suspension of programming, it was the third largest in 2020 as it was only provided from January - March to large groups of students. Food is provided for students after school and during weekly activities. Students are encouraged to maintain healthy lifestyles through better dietary choices, so nutrition classes include meal planning, grocery shopping, and meal preparation. Meals are also provided during trips off-reservation to museums, colleges, and special events.
Transportation represents the final large non-payroll program expense. The ministry maintains two 15-passenger vans which are used to transport students from AYM to their homes on the reservation following our weekday after-school programming, and to/from AYM for other weekly activities and special events. The vans provide transportation for the students to all off-reservation activities/events. Insurance, vehicle maintenance and registration all continued throughout 2020 despite the lockdown, though fuel expense was substantially reduced.
