Organizations Filed Purposes: The mission of the Animal Defense League of Arizona is to protect and defend Arizona's animals.

Companion Animals:Spay Neuter Hot-line - Provides spay/neuter services for Pets and Outdoor Cats in Arizona.ADLAs telephone and web based Spay/Neuter Hotline referral service continued statewide operations in 2019. It made referrals to pet spay and neuter programs and clinics throughout Arizona. The Spay Neuter Hotline did a significant amount of outreach in low income communities in Maricopa County, by participating in events, such as health fairs, produce markets and others targeted for under served communities; and by reaching out to social service agencies. It also worked with a number of municipalities by providing information at events in their jurisdictions The Hotline also made referrals to pet owners who needed low cost, and in Graham County, free spay neuter services to low income pet owners. In Maricopa County, the Hotline sterilized 11,022 Outdoor Cats. In Graham County, it sterilized 46 pet dogs and cats.The Spay Neuter Hotline provided financial assistance to hundreds of low income cat colony caregivers in Maricopa County and pet owners in Graham County Through ADLAs membership in the Alliance for Companion Animals, it joined other organizations and local funders to continue Fix. Adopt Save. A campaign addressing dog and cat homelessness in Maricopa County. After seven years, euthanasia rates have decreased by 86%, saving more than 32,000 animals per year. This comes as a result of a continued focus on spay/neuter surgeries which have resulted in a 43% decrease in the intake of animals at Alliance Shelters which represents 38,000 fewer pets per year.Wildlife:ADLAs wildlife program focuses on protecting habitat and key species in Arizona. ADLA monitors the Arizona Game and Fish Commission and Department, focusing on protection of keystone species such as mountain lions and prairie dogs and participated in wildlife coalitions to protect those and other species. ADLA participated in successful efforts to encourage the Arizona Game & Fish Commission to ban contest hunts of certain predatory fur-bearing animals. After four dolphins died at a commercial entertainment facility near Scottsdale, ADLA joined others in successfully advocating for transfer of all dolphin to another facility and the permanent closure of the dolphin exhibit. Wolf Recovery:ADLA was a participant in the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project and other collaborative efforts working to better protect the Mexican gray wolf. General Education/Outreach:Through its website, voicemail systems, meetings and outreach tables and social media such as Facebook and Twitter, ADLA works to educate the public about issues affecting Arizona's animals. ADLA continued its involvement in the Voices for Arizona's Animals! campaign, encouraging members of the animal protection community to register to vote.Legislative:ADLA volunteers monitored proposed legislation in Arizona so that it could comment on any pending measures affecting animals, support those that would benefit animals and oppose those that would be detrimental to animals. It also coordinated communications among a number of animal protection organizations and individual advocates who have an interest in legislation. It coordinated grassroots volunteers, and the work of peer organizations, acting as a resource for animal advocates and legislators on a variety of animal issues. It also provided support to rural shelters throughout Arizona to help them with their legislative agendas. ADLA was a member of the Humane Legislative Coalition of Arizona, working with a professional lobbyist and three partner organizations to further its legislative program to strengthen Arizona's anti-cruelty law.ADLA supported the passage of HB2671 which was signed into law in 2019. This new law will prevent the most egregious cases of animal abuse from being reduced from felonies to misdemeanors.
