THE PUENTE HUMAN RIGHTS MOVEMENT IS A MIGRANT WORKER JUSTICE FOUNDATION BASED IN PHOENIX, AZ. WE DEVELOP, EDUCATE, AND EMPOWER MIGRANT COMMUNITIES TO PROTECT AND DEFEND OUR FAMILIES AND OURSELVES.
PUENTE PROVIDED 530 MEALS TO OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS THROUGH OUR FOOD BANK. THIS INCLUDED 105 FAMILIES, ALONG WITH 119 CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 5. IN JUNE OF 2019, PUENTE RESTARTED OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN, PUENTE JARDIN, TO BEAUTIFY OUR CAMPUS AND REINTRODUCE SPIRITUAL AND HEALING PRACTICES TO OUR PERSPECTIVE MEMBERSHIPS YOUTH, IMMIGRATION, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. WE HELPED 450 COMMUNITY MEMBERS RENEW THEIR DACA APPLICATIONS. WE HELD WEEKLY KNOW YOUR RIGHTS TRAININGS 12 IN TOTAL THROUGH THE VALLEY IN THE SUMMER OF 2019 TO EDUCATE OUR PEOPLE ON THE REALITIES OF POLICE/ICE INTERACTIONS. STARTED A FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM FOR COMMUNITY ALLIES TO INTERACT AND ENGAGE WITH OUR LOVED ONES INSIDE OF DETENTION CENTERS. WE HAD UPWARDS OF 30 PARTICIPANTS DEVOTING THEIR TIME TO GO TO A MYRIAD OF CENTERS TO DOCUMENT THE CONDITIONS AND ABUSES INSIDE OF THESE FACILITIES.
HELD VARIOUS CULTURAL EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR OF 2019, BUT THE MOST NOTABLE WAS OUR DIA DE LOS MUERTOS EVENT HELD IN NOVEMBER WHICH BOOSTED AN ATTENDANCE OF 500 COMMUNITY MEMBERS. WE ACTIVELY HELD CULTURAL WORKSHOPS AND TRAININGS LEADING UP TO AND AROUND DIA DE LOS MUERTOS TO CELEBRATE THE HISTORIES OF OUR PEOPLE. PUENTE YOUTH MOVEMENT HELD TWO PROGRAMS SPRING AND FALL TO EDUCATE OUR YOUTH ON CULTURAL AND POLITICAL THEMES. EACH SESSION HOSTED 15 STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE 8 WEEK PROGRAM WITH TWO PAID YOUTH INTERNS TO SUPERVISE AND MANAGE FEEDBACK AND PROGRESS.
PUENTE BEGAN A CAMPAIGN TO DECRIMINALIZE MENTAL HEALTH WITH THE CASES OF VALENTINA GLORIA AND BREANNA MARTINEZ. BOTH WERE RELEASED DUE TO OUR ADVOCACY AND ARE NOW MANAGING THEIR MENTAL HEALTH WITH THE HELP OF THEIR RESPECTIVE FAMILIES AND MEDICAL STAFF. IN OCTOBER OF 2019, PUENTE HELD ITS FIRST TRIBUNAL TO EXPAND ON THE RECENTLY RELEASED ELOY REPORT, WHICH DETAILED THE GROSS INJUSTICES TAKING PLACE IN THE INFAMOUS ELOY DETENTION CENTER ALONG WITH THE WHOLE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. BUILDING UPON OUR ACCOUNTABILITY WORK, PUENTE HUMAN RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN ASSOCIATION WITH VARIOUS LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS HELPED PASS THE FIRST EVER CIVILIAN REVIEW BOARD FOR THE CITY OF PHOENIX TO HOLD THE PHOENIX POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR USE OF EXCESSIVE FORCE PRACTICES.
