Organizations Filed Purposes:
To provide job training and part time income to at-risk teens and former prisoners in two large vegetable gardens managed by TigerMountain on formerly vacant lots in South Phoenix as well as on landscaping jobs.
Building, maintaining and managing two large, community gardens on formerly vacant lots, in low income areas of south Phoenix, areas that have problems with gangs, drugs and low graduation rates. The 80 or so gardeners are paid for their part-time work in the vegetable gardens and for marketing produce at the Farmers Markets. Most of TigerMountain's gardeners are former prisoners or at-risk teenagers, and many of them are referred to TigerMountain by the courts as an alternative to incarcerantion. All gardeners are required to write down three personal goals which are reviewed and updated quarterly with TigerMountain staff. TigerMountain rents plots of garden areas to individuals and groups, providing irrigation water and compost, for those who want to grow their own vegetables, while managing some plots for the TME's gardener.
Providing on-the-job learning experiences to about 20 former drug addicts with supervised landscaping work. As the landscapers learn work skills and self discipline, most of them transition to full-time jobs. Some of them are senior's who supplement their meager income by working part-time on the landscape jobs. They serve as mentors and model's for the younger landscapers
Hosting community garden demonstrations and volunteer opportunities every 2nd and 4th Saturdays, open to all. Harvested vegetables are offered for donations. Volunteers and student interns work in the garden alongside TigerMountain clients in teams supervised by TigerMountain staff members.
