NATURAL HISTORY INSTITUTE IS ORGANIZED TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP AND RESOURCES FOR A REVITALIZED PRACTICE OF NATURAL HISTORY THAT INTEGRATES ART, SCIENCE, AND HUMANITIES TO PROMOTE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF HUMANS AND THE REST OF THE NATURAL WORLD.
IN 2020, WE MADE CONSIDERABLE STRIDES FORWARD IN ACTUALIZING THE PROMISE OF OUR TAGLINE, "INTEGRATING ART, SCIENCE, AND HUMANITIES" - IN SPITE OF THE UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC. THE YEAR BEGAN NORMALLY, AS WE COMPLETED OUR THIRD SUCCESSFUL TOUCHSTONE TOUR TO ECUADOR, HAD TWO ART-RELATED FIELD PROGRAMS, AND COMMENCED A NEW GROUP EXHIBITION IN OUR ART GALLERY, ALONG WITH A SPEAKER SERIES LECTURE. WE ALSO MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS WITH OUR SCIENCE PROGRAMS BY CONVENING THE FIRST MEETING (COMBINED IN-PERSON AND ON-LINE) OF OUR NEW SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COUNCIL, WHICH PROVIDED GREATER CLARITY ON PRIORITIES FOR OUR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. THEN, THE WORLD CLOSED DOWN.IN MID-MARCH, WE MADE THE DIFFICULT BUT CLEAR DECISION TO START CLOSING DOWN OUR FACILITIES TO THE PUBLIC, AND THEN CANCELING THE DOZENS OF PROGRAMS - TOUCHSTONE TOURS, FIELD WORKSHOPS, GALLERY EXHIBITIONS, AND SPEAKER SERIES PRESENTATIONS - THAT WERE SCHEDULED FOR THE UPCOMING MONTHS, WHILE COMMUNICATING WITH SENSITIVITY TO OUR WIDESPREAD PUBLIC ABOUT WHY WE WERE TAKING THESE ACTIONS, AND HOW WE WERE GOING TO TRY TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE SOLACE AND INSIGHT THROUGHOUT THIS CRISIS. IN SHORT ORDER, WE TOOK STOCK OF WHAT ASSETS WE HAD TO OFFER THE WORLD, RECALIBRATED OUR METHODS OF SHARING, AND LAUNCHED SEVERAL NEW TYPES OF PROGRAMS, ALL ON-LINE.THESE NEW PROGRAM AREAS INCLUDED; A) A SERIES OF SIX WEBINAR-BASED PROGRAMS, MOST IN A NEW SERIES, "STORIES OF NATURE AND CULTURE," WHICH EMPHASIZED SHARING OF CROSS-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES; B) THE "REAL GROUND INITIATIVE," WHICH INVITED AUTHORS AND ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO SHARE THEIR PERSPECTIVES ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NATURE AND THEMSELVES DURING THIS PANDEMIC; C) "NOTES FROM THE FIELD," A SERIES OF MORE THAN 20 EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS THAT SHARED NATURAL HISTORY INSIGHTS, AND ENCOURAGED VIEWERS TO ENGAGE WITH NATURE IN WHATEVER WAYS WERE FEASIBLE FOR THEMSELVES. TO MAKE ALL THIS ON-LINE CONTENT AS WIDELY AVAILABLE AS POSSIBLE, WE DEVELOPED OUR OWN YOUTUBE CHANNEL. THERE ARE NOW OVER 500 SUBSCRIBERS TO THE CHANNEL, AND SOME INDIVIDUAL VIDEOS HAVE BEEN VIEWED MORE THAN 1000 TIMES. WE ALSO ADAPTED SOME OF OUR FIELD WORKSHOPS CONCERNING WAYS OF CONNECTING TO NATURE TO ON-LINE FORMAT. THIS ROBUST ON-LINE PROGRAMMING PROVIDED OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPATION IN OUR PROGRAMS IN MUCH MORE DIVERSE GEOGRAPHIC AND DEMOGRAPHIC POPULATIONS. SOME OF OUR WEBINAR-BASED PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS HAD PARTICIPANTS FROM MULTIPLE NATIONS.THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR, WE ACTIVELY PARTNERED WITH AN ESPECIALLY ROBUST ARRAY OF OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING: ANDEAN STUDY PROGRAMS, ASSOCIATION FOR THE STUDY OF LITERATURE AND ENVIRONMENT, CENTER FOR BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION AT THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY (NEW YORK), DESERT LABORATORY AT TUMAMOC HILL ART AND SCIENCE PROGRAM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA, ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA, ECOPSYCHOLOGY JOURNAL, FICTION MEETS SCIENCE PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BREMEN (GERMANY), THE KING'S ENGLISH BOOKSTORE (SALT LAKE CITY), MILKWEED EDITIONS, NATURA INSTITUTE OF ECOLOGY AND MEDICINE, PEREGRINE BOOK COMPANY, STANFORD UNIVERSITY - BILL LANE CENTER, AND TORREY HOUSE PRESS.
TOUCHSTONE TOURS: AS MENTIONED ABOVE, OUR THIRD ANNUAL "ECUADOR: BRIGHT ISLANDS, DEEP FOREST" TOUR SUCCESSFULLY PROCEEDED AS PLANNED IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY. BUT TWO OTHER TOUCHSTONE TOURS - "THE GEOLOGY AND NATURAL HISTORY OF THE SAN JUAN RIVER,X AND A NEW PROGRAM "CASCADIA WILD: OLD GROWTH FORESTS, GLACIAL PEAKS, AND WILDFLOWER MEADOWS," HAD TO BE CANCELED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. BOTH OF THESE PROGRAMS ALREADY HAD PARTICIPANTS REGISTERED AT THE TIME OF CANCELLATION. WE PLAN TO OFFER THESE AGAIN IN THE FUTURE.
RESEARCH: IN SPITE OF THE CHALLENGES OF QUARANTINE, WE MADE SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN OUR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROGRAM. AS MENTIONED ABOVE, WE CONVENED THE FIRST MEETING OF OUR SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COUNCIL, PROVIDING CLEAR DIRECTION FOR OUR RESEARCH EFFORTS. WE CONTRACTED WITH HERPETOLOGISTS TO CONDUCT A STUDY (STILL IN PROCESS) ON THE BIOGEOGRAPHY OF SNAKES IN THE MOGOLLON HIGHLANDS ECOREGION. WE ALSO MOVED TOWARD COMPLETION OF THE ON-LINE CATALOGING OF OUR 9000+ SPECIMEN HERBARIUM. WE CREATED A NEW FEATURE ON OUR WEBSITE, "GREENE VIEW: RESEARCH REFLECTIONS FROM HARRY W. GREENE," FEATURING DR. GREENE, EMERITUS FACULTY AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY, ELECTED MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, AND MEMBER OF THE NHI ADVISORY COUNCIL. IN THIS MONTHLY SERIES, DR. GREENE PRESENTS A KEY PUBLICATION FROM THE PROFESSIONAL SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE, PUTS IT IN PERSONAL CONTEXT, AND DEMONSTRATES FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC THE CRITICAL ROLE OF NATURAL HISTORY IN FURTHERING BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE.
