AT WASTE NOT, WE'RE CREATING SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS THAT HELP PEOPLE AND THE PLANET FLOURISH. WE DO THIS BY ELIMINATING FOOD WASTE AND HUNGER THROUGH INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS. A GREAT DEAL OF TIME, MONEY, AND RESOURCES GO INTO GROWING AND TRANSPORTING NUTRITIOUS FOOD. YET, EACH YEAR, 40% OF THAT FOOD IS THROWN AWAY. AT THE SAME TIME, NEARLY 1 MILLION PEOPLE IN ARIZONA ARE STRUGGLING WITH FOOD INSECURITY. WE'RE TRANSFORMING THIS BROKEN SYSTEM BY CONNECTING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ARIZONANS WITH QUALITY FOOD THAT WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE GONE TO WASTE. BY REIMAGINING WHAT'S POSSIBLE FOR FOOD RESCUE, WE'RE MAKING OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR PLANET HEALTHIER.
WASTE NOT WORKS WITH OVER 100 GENEROUS FOOD BUSINESSES IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT DONATE THEIR EXCESS FOOD, WHICH MAY OTHERWISE GO TO WASTE. THESE BUSINESSES INCLUDE GROCERS, CATERERS, RESTAURANTS, RESORTS, AND EVENT VENUES. USING OUR EFFICIENT, SAME DAY DELIVERY OPERATION, AN AVERAGE OF 7,000 POUNDS OF FOOD IS COLLECTED AND TRANSPORTED FIVE DAYS A WEEK, DIRECTLY TO ALMOST 80 NONPROFIT AGENCIES SEVERING THOSE IN NEED IN THE METRO PHOENIX AREA. FOR THE YEAR ENDING 6/30/20, WASTE NOT DIVERTED 1.8 MILLION POUNDS OF PREPARED AND PERISHABLE FOOD THAT WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE ENDED UP IN OUR LANDFILLS AND INSTEAD DELIVERED IT TO CHILDREN, ADULTS, AND SENIORS IN NEED.
WASTE NOT DEPLOYED A NEW FOOD RESCUE APP FOR SMALLER VOLUME FOOD DONATIONS THAT ALLOWS FOOD BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES, FROM LOCAL RESTAURANTS TO LARGE RETAILERS, TO QUICKLY AND EASILY POST SURPLUS FOOD ON THE PLATFORM. THE ALGORITHM OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO VOLUNTEER DRIVERS WHO CAN QUICKLY PICK UP THE DONATION AND DELIVER THE FOOD TO ONE OF WASTE NOT'S BEST-SUITED AGENCY PARTNERS FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THOSE IN NEED.
