Seeking a more compassionate and just world, Habitat for Humanity Tucson brings people together to build homes, community and hope.
Serving low income families by developing and preserving affordable housing in Southern Arizona
Habitat for Humanity Tucson partners with low-income individuals and families to build or improve a safe and stable place to call home. Utilizing volunteer efforts, Habitat Tucson builds and rehabilitates market quality homes to sell to eligible low-income families with a non-interest-bearing mortgage. Habitat homeowners help build their homes alongside volunteers, completing 250 hours per applicant of "sweat equity" through home construction or in another form of service to Habitat Tucson. This fiscal year, Habitat sold 11 new energy efficient homes to low income families in Pima County. (this next part is continued on Sched O). Habitat Tucson also partners with the community to provide critical and minor home repair services, which include roof replacements, mechanical system upgrades, exterior repairs, landscaping and neighborhood clean ups and minor interior modifications. These services support long-term health & safety livability for eligible families. In total, 26 comprehensive home repair projects were completed, which include 7 A Brush with Kindness projects. In addition, as part of Habitat's global impact partnership, 20 families in Mexico and Bangladesh now have access to adequate shelter, potable water and sanitation.
The HabiStore receives donated furniture, appliances, other household items and construction-related materials to sell which generates revenue to support the Habitat Tucson mission. This year, the donated items generated $1.6 million dollars in sales and diverted over 950 tons of useable materials from the landfill. These sales supported Habitat Tucson programs including new home construction, home repair, 'A Brush with Kindness', homeowner and volunteer services, and community outreach partnerships.
Homeowner Services provides information sessions to prospective homebuyers, guides families through the application and homeowner selection process, provides homeowner education classes to families selected, and supports families through the home buying process. In addition, community education classes are provided to homeowners and the general public on topics related to homeownership. This fiscal year, 5 community education classes were made available; 11 information sessions were held, and 387 people attended information sessions; 75 families went through the application process, and 11 families were selected for the homeownership program. (this next part is continued on Sched O). In addition, Homeowner Services supports the Housing Rehabilitation program by providing intake and screening services for families needing home repair services. This fiscal year, Habitat Tucson received over 400 inquiries for these services. Habitat's Volunteer Services provides opportunities and support to over 1,800 volunteers who donated more than 40,000 hours of services in home construction, retail, office and committee support and served as mentors and family partners to new homebuyers.
