The mission of Make Way for Books is to give all children the chance to read and succeed.
Family Education and Literacy Programs:Currently, four out of five young children in Pima County are not enrolled in high-quality early education. Make Way for Books provides access to high-quality early literacy education through programs that meet families with young children in high-need locations including community sites and neighborhood elementary schools as well as online. Children experience shared reading and literacy activities that help to build their critical emergent literacy and language skills. Through a two-generation approach, children and parents learn together. These programs feature a strong parent engagement focus, empowering parents with skills and resources to support their childrens literacy development. Programs provide engaging family literacy activities, regular access to high-quality books, and parent education. (Continued on Schedule O)
Story Project:This comprehensive early literacy strategy provides economically-disadvantaged children (ages birth to 5) with opportunities to discover the joy of books and develop early literacy skills. The program serves educators, families, and children enrolled at under-resourced preschools, childcare centers, and home-based care settings throughout southern Arizona. Through increased access to books and daily exposure to meaningful literacy activities, 97% of children gained critical literacy and language skills. Participating educators and parents learn strategies to share books to support their childs literacy and language development. As a result of the program, 99% of educators gained skills, confidence, and strategies to better support young children in their care. In 2019-20, the program served more than 7,400 young children, their parents, and nearly 600 educators. (Continued on Schedule O)
