Rescue Me Tucson provides resources for pets and their people through its compassionate collaborative-based pet adoption model.
RURAL OUTREACH: We partnered with several like-minded organizations including the Geronimo Animal Rescue Team (GART) and Rural Area Vet Services (RAVS), and were able to help over 400 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens who were isolated in a veterinary desert. We provided 7,850 pounds of pet food, 35 Dogloos, crates, and kennels, 25 bags of blankets and bedding, a variety of medical supplies, including a stainless steel exam/surgery table and flea & tick treatments to five (5) rural rescues. We also helped their owners with 100 masks, twin beds, a desk, and even a Christmas tree!
ADOPTION CENTER: We reviewed demographic information, area growth patterns, as well as adoption deserts (areas where no adoption facilities currently exist) to determine the best possible location available for the center. After reaching our fundraising benchmark in August 2020, we began in-person visits of potential sites.
EDUCATION: We advised victims who purchased sick puppies from unscrupulous pet stores about Arizona's Puppy Lemon Law - which reimburses only the purchase price of the sick pet. While these funds helped a bit, they did not cover any veterinary bills, nor did they make up for the trauma these pet owners endured. Through media outreach, we helped educate those choosing to buy a pet from a for-profit pet store of the risks associated with that transaction, namely that certain for-profit pet stores may put profits ahead of the health and welfare of the mother and her pups. We also connected persons having to surrender their pets to reputable rescue groups, helped others wanting a pure-bred dog find responsible breeders, and others to find low-cost veterinary care and pet food.
