SISTER JOSE WOMEN'S CENTER IS DEDICATED TO THE CARE AND NURTURE OF HOMELESS WOMEN IN A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT.
FOR MANY TUCSON WOMEN EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS, SISTER JOSE WOMEN'S CENTER (SJWC) IS THEIR ONLY SAFE HAVEN AND THE FIRST STEP TO RECOVERY FROM HOMELESSNESS. OUR LOW BARRIER DAY CENTER PROVIDES UNACCOMPANIED HOMELESS WOMEN WITH A STABLE AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT TO RECUPERATE FROM THE DAILY STRUGGLE OF HOMELESSNESS AND EXTREME POVERTY. THE DAY PROGRAM IS OPEN SIX DAYS A WEEK AND WE AVERAGE APPROXIMATELY 100 -120 WOMEN PER DAY. DURING THE DAY PROGRAM, WOMEN CAN GET A BITE TO EAT, DO LAUNDRY, SHOWER AND REST. LOCAL AGENCIES IN BEHAVORIAL HEALTH AND MEDICAL HOLD COUNSELING SESSIONS TO HELP THE WOMEN WITH NEEDED SERVICES. AT THE END OF THE YEAR, WE WILL HAVE HAD APPROXIMATELY 25,000 VISITS. THE NIGHT PROGRAM PROVIDES OVERNIGHT STAYS FOR WOMEN WHO WOULD OTHERWISE BE SLEEPING OUTSIDE. 35 WOMEN SPEND THE NIGHT ON COTS AND MATS AND ARE SAFE FROM THE VIOLENCE ON THE STREET. 12,775 BED NIGHTS HAVE OCCURRED IN THE PAST YEAR. WE HAVE HAD 80 WOMEN PARTICIPATE IN THE CREATE (CONFIDENCE, READINESS, EMPOWERMENT, ACTION, TRANSFORMATION, ENGAGEMENT)PROGRAM. 60 HAVE COMPLETED THE PROGRAM AND THIS PAST YEAR WE HAVE HELPED 70+ WOMEN LEAVE THE STREET TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE LIVING ARRANGEMENT. ALL OF THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH THE DEDICATION AND HARD WORK OF VOLUNTEERS AND UNIVERSITY INTERNS. THEY ARE THE HEARTBEAT OF SJWC. WE ARE MORE THAN A CENTER; WE ARE A COMMUNITY BUILT UPON THE VALUES OF COMPASSION, DIGNITY AND RESPECT IN A NONINSTITUTIONALIZED SETTING. FOR MANY OF OUR GUESTS, WE ARE HOME.
