THESE FUNDS ARE PART OF THE STEVEN M. GOOTTER SEED FUND ENDOWMENT AT THE STANFORD CARDIOVASCULAR INSTITUTE, A $1,000,000 ENDOWMENT THAT IS BEING ESTABLISHED TO FUND SEED GRANTS IN PERPETUITY TO DEVELOP A CURE FOR SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH. THE CORE OF THE INSTITUTE IS INTEGRATING FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND APPLYING TECHNOLOGY TO PREVENT AND TREAT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE. IN AN ERA OF CONSTANT CHANGE AND INNOVATION THE CARDIOVASCULAR INSTITUTE LEVERAGES THE INCREDIBLE INTELLECTUAL MANPOWER FOUND WITHIN STANFORD UNIVERSITY. THE STANFORD SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, STANFORD HOSPITAL & CLINICS, LUCILE PACKARD CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, THE INSTITUTE FOR STEM CELL BIOLOGY AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE, HUMANITIES & SCIENCES, ENGINEERING, AND BUSINESS SCHOOLS ARE ALL LOCATED ENTIRELY ON STANFORD'S SILICON VALLEY CAMPUS. THIS INTIMATE PROXIMITY PROMOTES CREATIVE COLLABORATIONS AMONG A DIVERSE MIX OF STUDENTS, FACULTY AND SCIENTISTS. ALSO IN 2019, THE STEVEN M GOOTTER FOUNDATION PROVIDED A $25,000 INVESTIGATOR AWARD TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA SARVER HEART CENTER TO CONTINUE THE RESEARCH THAT WE FUNDED IN 2018 DETERMINING HOW HUMAN ARRHYTHMOGENIC CARDIOMYOPATY CELLS LEAD TO PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH.
IN AN UNPARALLELED MOVE TO PREVENT AVOIDABLE DEATHS FROM SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST, THE STEVEN M. GOOTTER FOUNDATION HAS PROVIDED OVER 300 AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS (AEDS) TO THE TUCSON POLICE DEPARTMENT, PIMA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, SOUTHERN ARIZONA SCHOOLS, PLACES OF WORSHIP AND RECREATIONAL CENTERS THAT DID NOT HAVE THESE LIFE SAVING DEVICES. THE LONG RANGE GOAL OF THE FOUNDATION IS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE PLACES WHERE PEOPLE WORK, WORSHIP AND PLAY WILL HAVE AN AED IN CASE IT IS EVER NEEDED. IN 2019, THE FOUNDATION DONATED $6,533 WORTH OF AEDS TO VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS.
