RESERVOIR COMMUNITY FARM AND YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - RESERVOIR COMMUNITY FARM, BRIDGEPORT'S FIRST URBAN FARM, IS A 1.7 ACRE WELCOMING COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE AND EDUCATIONAL FARM. WE ENGAGE HUNDREDS OF INDIVIDUALS IN FARMING AND GARDENING WHILE GROWING AND SELLING 4,000 POUNDS OF PESTICIDE-FREE PRODUCE AT BELOW MARKET PRICES. EACH YEAR HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS HAVE GROWN WITH US AT RESERVOIR COMMUNITY FARM DURING OPEN VOLUNTEER DAYS. OUR YOUTH PROGRAM CULTIVATES LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH AS REPRESENTATIVES OF SOCIAL CHANGE. THE PROGRAM INCORPORATES JOB-READINESS AND FOOD JUSTICE ADVOCACY IN ADDITION TO AGRICULURAL SKILL-BUILDING AT RESERVOIR COMMUNITY FARM. A NEW YOUTH ADVISORY GROUP HELPS DIRECT OUR TEAM AND BOARD TOWARD CREATING MORE VALUABLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH IN BRIDGEPORT. WE TEAM UP WITH OTHERS TO OFFER SOCIAL JUSTICE AND AGRICULTURAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR BRIDGEPORT YOUTH. MORE THAN 400 STUDENTS VISIT OUR FARM EACH YEAR TO DIG INTO GROWING, COMPOSTING, BEEKEEPING AND NUTRITION. MORE THAN 100 COMMUNTY MEMBERS ATTEND OUR HARVEST FESTIVAL AT THE FARM, ENJOYING FOOD AND LIVE MUSIC. OUR FARM STAND IS OPEN ON THURSDAYS AND SATURDAYS DURING THE GROWING SEASON, SELLING AFFORDABLE VEGETABLES. OUR FARM STAND ALSO DOUBLES THE VALUE OF SNAP PROGRAM CREDIT UP TO $10. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO PURCHASE PRODUCE WITH ASSISTANCE SUCH AS FARMERS MARKET NUTRITION PROGRAM VOUCHERS.
COMMUNITY GARDENS AND PARTNER GARDENS - COMMUNITY GARDENS IS A NETWORK OF 13 NEIGHBORHOOD GARDENS THAT NOURISH OUR BRIDGEPORT COMMUNITY. GARDENS PROVIDE FAMILIES A PLACE TO GROW VEGETABLES OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE IN MOST OR ALL BRIDGEPORT NEIGHBORHOODS AND HELP STRETCH FOOD BUDGETS. GVI DELIVERS STREAMLINED SUPPORT TO INCREASE GARDENERS' SELF-RELIANCE AND FACILITATE AGRICULTURAL SKILL-BUILDING AMONG THE COMMUNITY. OUR TEAM CONSULTS PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS AND PEER GROUPS ON BUILDING AND MAINTAINING GARDEN BEDS AND COMMUNITY GARDENS. OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN NETWORK SUPPORTS ABOUT 100 BRIDGEPORT FAMILIES IN GROWING THEIR OWN FOOD. OUR WORKSHOP WITH PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS OFFER SKILL BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS USE GARDENS AT BRIDGEPORT PUBLIC SCHOOLS. SCHOOL GARDEN CHAMPIONS(USUALLY TEACHERS OR EDUCATORS) ENGAGE STUDENTS IN SEEDING,MAINTAING, AND HARVESTING THEIR GARDEN. GVI OFFERS SUPPORT AND RESOURCES TO SCHOOL GARDEN CHAMPIONS IN THE FORM OF SKILL BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES,EXPERIENTIAL FARM FIELD TRIPS,CLASSROOM TOOLS AND GARDENING SUPPLIES. WE NOW PROVIDE SCHOOL GARDEN LESSON PLANS THAT LINK DIRECTLY TO BRIDGEPORT'S CURRICULUM STANDARDS; COUPLED WITH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS, THIS INCREASES TEACHER CONFIDENCE AND ABILITY TO USE SCHOOL GARDENS AS AN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM. OUR LONG-TERM STRATEGY IS TO INTEGRATE SCHOOL GARDENS INTO SCHOOL CULTURE AND CURRICULUM.
