I-Park's Mission: Nurturing artists and the creative process in the fine arts and in nature. I-Park is both an open-air and a private-studio laboratory for individual creative pursuits in the fields of music composition/sound art, visual arts, architecture, new media, creative writing and landscape/garden/ecological design. It also initiates and sponsors specially-themed inter-disciplinary and collaborative projects for the purpose of moving these ideas out of the laboratory setting and bringing them to life in the public domain. I-Park supports these investigations through its international artists-in-residence program, the aesthetic engagement of its natural and built environments and with on-site exhibitions, performances and collegial exchanges.
Primarily through its international artists-in-residence program, I-Park nurtures artistic creativity and excellence, in the abstract and at the level of the individual artist. I-Park also has a specific interest in site-responsive art and makes its expansive grounds available to those working in this field. I-Park's core General Residency Program brings together a multi-disciplinary mix of artists developing promising ideas, and creating new works, in a quiet, intimate, retreat-type setting. I-Park prides itself on the high level of personalized attention given to the artists as they strive to realize their most ambitious artistic goals.
I-Park's core activity is its General Residency Program. Artists and designers from the following disciplines participate: visual arts (including environmental art), creative writing, music composition/sound art, new media, landscape/garden/ecological design and architecture. Mixed-discipline groups, generally 6-7 artists at a time, spend a month together at the I-Park facility. They are provided with a private bedroom, private studio, meals program, workshop and other shared spaces, enthusiastic staff support and open access to an expansive, varied natural landscape with miles of art/nature trails. While most participants are primarily devoted to studio practice, many choose to explore the limitless creative potential afforded by the I-Park grounds. The residencies are fully-funded; artists' only costs are for travel to and from the area and their own art materials. In 2019, I-Park hosted 41 artists in the General Residency Program.
In 2019, I-Park hosted its seventh Site-Responsive Art Residency & Biennale, a multi-disciplinary exhibition of top-quality works from the field of site-responsive environmental art. The program included a 3-week onsite residency during which the new works were conceived and installed. Nine outstanding works were created for the exhibition. Five of the artists were from the U.S. and four came from overseas. The 2019 Biennale garnered record attendance as the grounds were opened to the public on several occasions from mid-September through November 2020.
I-Park extended its public programming in 2019. With substantial support from a grant awarded by the State of Connecticut DECD, I-Park totally renovated its Common Area meeting hall where many of its events are hosted. It increased public access to its system of art/nature trails including the Site-Responsive Art Biennale trail. It installed new park benches, had full-house attendance at most of its Open Studios events and once again hosted Connecticut Trails Day. It also raised $1,900 at its September gala to host a "Family Day at I-Park" event in 2020.
