Organizations Filed Purposes: The Amistad Center for Art & Culture, Inc. is a dynamic cultural institution that cares for and provides public access to its collection of more than 7,000 works of art and artifacts that document the African American experience and can be considered a national treasure. Through high caliber exhibitions and culture-based education programs and events inspired by this collection, The Amistad Center engages, enlightens, and entertains art enthusiasts, scholars, students, individuals and families throughout the Greater Hartford region and, through traveling exhibitions, the nation. The Amistad Center is housed in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, the country's oldest public art museum, which uniquely enables our institution to serve and satisfy a variety of audiences and interests.

We celebrate art and culture of people of African descent through education, scholarship and social experiences.

CURATORIAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE EXHIBITION PLANNING, DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION; PARTICIPATING IN WADSWORTH COMMITTEES AND PROJECTS RELATING TO MUSEUM-WIDE EXHIBITION PROGRAMMING, MUSEUM-WIDE COLLECTION INSTALLATION AND INTERPRETATION; STAFFING THE CURATORIAL COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. COLLECTION ACTIVITIES INCLUDE CARE (CONSERVATION, FRAMING), MANAGEMENT (LOANS, INVENTORY, RECORD KEEPING), DEVELOPMENT (PURCHASES, GIFTS) AND SCHOLARLY RESEARCH OF THE AMISTAD CENTER'S COLLECTION OF MORE THAN 7,000 WORKS OF ART, ARTIFACTS AND DOCUMENTS.Exhibition related activities include the development of the exhibition concept, creation of the checklist of works to be included in the exhibition, coordination of loans and conservation of artwork with museum personnel, writing explanatory labels and wall text, writing and coordinating the design of catalogues or other publications and information to be present on the website, coordinating image use permissions, working with artists to create or install work, opening receptions and events, docent training.

EDUCATION - EDUCATION RELATED ACTIVITIES INCLUDE DEVELOPMENT , IMPLEMENTATION AND MANAGEMENT OF YOUTH SERVING PROGRAMS E.G. TEEN ADVISORY GROUP (TAG), NEIGHBORHOOD STUDIOS SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM AND FAMILY /COMMUNITY DAYS; ADULT PUBLIC PROGRAMS SUCH AS TOURS AND LECTURES; PRINTED MATERIAL DEVELOPED TO AMPLIFY EXHIBITION CONCEPTS E.G. GALLERY GUIDES, EXHIBITION CATALOGUES.
