To empower the youth of Hartford to reach their potential as athletes, scholars, and engaged citizens.
Guided by an inch wide, mile deep philosophy of youth programming, Capitol Squash begins working with students in elementary school and engages them in intensive, year-round programming through high school and college. All programming takes place at Trinity College in Hartford and Miss Porter's School in Farmington. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2020, Capitol Squash completed its sixth year of programming. The program provides instruction in squash, academic enrichment, and community service opportunities. In 2020, Capitol Squash served 58 students in grades fourth through ninth. Beginning in elementary school and extending through high school graduation, each Capitol Squash student has a minimum of three afternoon practices a week with one hour of squash and one hour of academic tutoring. Over the course of the regular school year, our students receive more than 100 hours of supervised academic instruction and more than 100 hours of supervised squash instruction. As a result of COVID-19, beginning in March 2020, Capitol Squash coverted its programs from "in-house" to "virtual", and cancelled the "Capitol Cup", its major fundraising event.During the 2019-2020 school year, three students atended private boarding school and two students were accepted into boarding school for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Capitol Squash also sponsored students to attend summer camps at Taft School, Phillips Exeter Academy, YMCA Camp Woodstock, Kingswood Oxford, Winding Trails, and Camp Jewell. Prior to COVID-19, students had traveled to different states and cities for squash tournaments.The organization receives significant in-kind services and use of facilities. Trinity College provides squash court time, about 38 hours per week for 25 weeks, with a value estimated at about $14,375, which is not recorded in the Form 990 revenues and expenses. Trinity students also volunteer as tutors and mentors. Expenses $281,582.
