Organizations Filed Purposes: HOLDING ITS COLLECTION IN TRUST FOR ALL PEOPLE, THE WADSWORTH ATHENEUM IS DEDICATED TO ADVANCING AND INSPIRING EVERYONE TO EXPERIENCE AND APPRECIATE EXCELLENCE IN ART AND CULTURE.

FINE ART MUSEUM

CURATING AND CURATORIAL RESEARCH FY2020THE CURATORIAL DIVISION CARES FOR, RESEARCHES, AND DISPLAYS THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTION OF ART. THESE INCLUDE PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES, DECORATIVE ARTS (FURNITURE, GLASS, CERAMICS, AND METALWORK), WORKS ON PAPER, COSTUMES AND TEXTILES, AND VIDEOS, RANGING IN DATE FROM ANTIQUITY TO CONTEMPORARY AND INCLUDING WORKS FROM MOST CONTINENTS. THE CURATORIAL DIVISION IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR CURATING THE EXHIBITION PROGRAM FOR THE MUSEUM, WHICH IN FY2020 COMPRISED THE FOLLOWING:BE SEEN: PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY SINCE STONEWALL, JUNE 22-SEPTEMBER 15, 2019; AFROCOSMOLOGIES: AMERICAN REFLECTIONS;

EDUCATION AND VISITOR SERVICES THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AT THE WADSWORTH ATHENEUM MUSEUM OF ART PROVIDES LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL AUDIENCES. PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES, PREK-12 AND COLLEGE STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, AND FOR OUR BROADER PUBLIC ACTIVATE OUR COLLECTIONS AND SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AND ENCOURAGE VISITOR CONNECTIONS WITH ART'S HISTORY AND CONTEMPORARY MEANING. THE DEPARTMENT WORKS CLOSELY WITH CURATORIAL, MARKETING AND DEVELOPMENT ON INTERPRETIVE PROJECTS, EVALUATION EFFORTS FOR PROGRAMS AND EXHIBITIONS, AND FUNDRAISING. ADULT-CENTERED PROGRAMS TAKE MANY SHAPES, INCLUDING GALLERY TALKS, COURSES, DEMONSTRATIONS, DANCE AND MUSIC PERFORMANCES, PANEL DISCUSSIONS AND EVENTS THAT INCLUDE SOCIAL INTERACTION AROUND ART. MANY PROGRAMS WERE CANCELED OR POSTPONED FROM MARCH 2020 THROUGH THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. SOME WERE REFORMATTED INTO VIRTUAL PROGRAMS ALONG WITH AN ENDEAVOR TO DEVELOP MORE ROBUST DIGITAL CONTENT. MAJOR ADULT PROGRAMS IN FY20 INCLUDED THOSE SUPPORTING THE EXHIBITIONS BE SEEN: PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY SINCE STONEWALL AND AFROCOSOMOLOGIES: AMERICAN REFLECTIONS. THIS PAST SPRING BROUGHT CHALLENGES, BUT PROGRAMS LIKE MUSEUM ON THE MOVE, COMMUNITY DAYS, AND SECOND SATURDAYS FOR FAMILIES CONTINUED TO CONNECT WITH AN EVOLVING DEMOGRAPHIC AND DEEPEN THE MUSEUM'S RELATIONSHIP WITH FAMILIES, SCHOOLS, AND THE HARTFORD COMMUNITY. IN FY20, ALMOST 5,000 VISITORS PARTICIPATED IN YOUTH AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS, AND OVER 6,000 IN SCHOOL AND TEACHER PROGRAMS. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS FOR K-12 TEACHERS FOCUSED ON INTEGRATING ART WITH SCHOOL CURRICULA, ENCOURAGING EDUCATORS OF SCIENCE, MATH, SOCIAL STUDIES, AND LANGUAGES TO CONSIDER WAYS TO USE ART AS A VEHICLE FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY TEACHING. MUCH OF OUR DEPARTMENT'S WORK DEPENDS ON AN ACTIVE DOCENT COUNCIL. EIGHTY-TWO DOCENTS TOURED OVER 10,000 VISITORS BEFORE THE MUSEUM'S TEMPORARY CLOSURE IN MARCH. THE DEPARTMENT DEVELOPS INTERPRETIVE CONTENT, CREATING AUDIO TOURS AS WELL AS IN-GALLERY INTERACTIVES FOR EXHIBITIONS AND INSTALLATIONS TO BRING THE PUBLIC CLOSER TO ART. IN FY20, THE DEPARTMENT CREATED AUDIO TOURS FOR ITS MAJOR EXHIBITIONS, BRINGING FORWARD THE VOICES OF ARTISTS, CULTURAL HISTORIANS, CURATORS, AND EDUCATORS. OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENGAGEMENT IN THE GALLERIES OFFERED LISTENING, DRAWING, WRITING, AND OTHER CREATIVE ACTIVITIES. BEFORE THE EXHIBITION BE SEEN, LGBTQ+ VISITORS WERE INVITED TO SHARE PERSONAL PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY THAT REPRESENTED THEIR IDENTITIES AND COMMUNITIES TO SOCIAL MEDIA. A SELECTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS WAS ON VIEW IN THE EXHIBITION SPACE. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS INVOLVE STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS IN THE LIFE OF THE MUSEUM. THIS PAST YEAR 13 INTERNS FROM FIVE UNIVERSITIES WERE PLACED IN FIVE DEPARTMENTS TO ENGAGE IN PROJECT-BASED PLACEMENTS WITH PROFESSIONAL MENTORS. THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT'S MFA IN ARTS ADMINISTRATION WILL BE HOUSED WITHIN THE MUSEUM IN THE COMING YEAR, OFFERING NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR ENGAGEMENT WITH THE COHORT OF ABOUT A DOZEN GRADUATE STUDENTS AND TWO FACULTY. THE ENCOUNTERS SERIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY AND THE UCONN HUMANITIES INSTITUTE DREW FACULTY, STUDENTS, AND GENERAL PUBLIC FOR CONVERSATIONS AT THE MUSEUM AROUND CIVIC ISSUES. THE VISITOR SERVICES DEPARTMENT WELCOMES AND ORIENTS ALL VISITORS TO THE MUSEUM. THE TEAM TAKES THE LEAD ON SURVEYING AUDIENCES, MANAGING THE MUSEUM'S ROBUST VOLUNTEER PROGRAM THAT PLACES VOLUNTEERS THROUGHOUT THE MUSEUM FOR DEPARTMENT AND PROGRAM SUPPORT, AND REGISTERING HARTFORD RESIDENTS FOR FREE ADMISSION THROUGH WADSWORTH WELCOME. MORE THAN 4,600 PEOPLE WHO SPEAK 54 LANGUAGES IN THEIR HOMES HAVE REGISTERED FOR WADSWORTH WELCOME SINCE IT BEGAN IN 2016.
