Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE NEW CANAAN MUSEUM & HISTORICAL SOCIETY IS A CULTURAL INSTITUTION THAT FOCUSES ON PRESERVATION, MODERNISM, EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY. THROUGH EXHIBITS, PROGRAMS, LIBRARY SERVICES AND EVENTS, WE CELEBRATE HISTORY AND EXPLORE ITS ROLE IN SHAPING THE FUTURE.
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE NEW CANAAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY WAS "TO BRING TOGETHER AND ARRANGE THE HISTORICAL EVENTS OF THE TOWN OF NEW CANAAN, THE GENEALOGIES OF THE FAMILIES WHO HAVE LIVED IN TOWN, TO FORM A LIBRARY AND TO COLLECT RELICS AND CURIOSITIES, AND TO FORM A MUSEUM." OUR MISSION NOW ADDS TO THIS DIRECTIVE BY EMPHASIZING RESEARCH, PRESERVATION, AND EDUCATION. OUR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE SCHOOL TOURS, A MODERN HOUSE DAY TOUR TO CELEBRATE MID CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE, AND NUMEROUS EXHIBITIONS.
THE SOCIETY'S DAILY OPERATIONS ENCOMPASS MANY DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES:THE SOCIETY MAINTAINS AND OPERATES NEW CANAAN'S FIRST TOWN HALL (1825), NOW EXPANDED TO HOUSE A LIBRARY AND VAULT WITH DOCUMENTS, GENEALOGIES, ART AND ARTIFACTS, AS WELL AS THE SILLMAN-MONROE-CODY DRUG STORE MUSEUM (1846) AND AN EXTENSIVE CLOTHING AND TEXTILE COLLECTION; THE HANFORD-SILLMAN HOUSE MUSEUM (C. 1764); THE ROGERS STUDIO MUSEUM (1878); THE TOOL MUSEUM AND NINETEENTH-CENTURY PRINTING OFFICE; THE ROCK SCHOOL (1799); OFF CAMPUS THE LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE (1855), AND THE MID-CENTURY MODERN GORES PAVILION (1960). IT OPERATES A RESEARCH LIBRARY; A FULL SCHEDULE OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS; A PLAQUING PROGRAM FOR HISTORIC HOMES; PUBLICATIONS ON NEW CANAAN'S HISTORY. IT HAS THREE GALLERY SPACES AND PUTS ON EXHIBITIONS IN EACH OF THOSE. IT RUNS PROGRAMS, EVENTS AND LECTURES. THE LARGEST PROGRAMS FROM FISCAL YEAR 2020 WERE: (1) HAT MADNESS, AN EXHIBITION ON THE HISTORY OF HAT-MAKING IN CT WITH HATS FROM THE 1790S TO THE PRESENT, ALONG WITH CLOTHING, HAT BOXES AND OTHER RELATED ARTIFACTS; (2) THE LAUNCH OF OCTOBER 4 DESIGN, A COLLECTION OF PROGRAMS AND EVENTS FOR OCTOBER 2020 (FY 2021). THE MAIN FUNDRAISERS AND A SIGNIFICANT EXHIBITION SCHEDULED FOR THE SPRING WERE CANCELLED DUE TO COVID.
