ADVANCE THE EMERGING FIELDS OF OCEAN EXPLORATION AND ARCHAELOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY THROUGH CO-SPONSORING AND SUPPORTING DEEP SEA EXPEDITIONS AND SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY REQUIRED BY DEEP SEA EXPEDITIONS. FURTHERING PUBLIC INTEREST AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE FIELDS OF OCEAN EXPLORATION AND ARCHAELOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF REAL-TIME EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AND DISSEMINATION OF DEEP SEA EXPEDITION RESEARCH THROUGH A VARIETY OF EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH EFFORTS.
IN 2019, OET COMPLETED A 5.5-MONTH FIELD SEASONCOMPRISED OF 13CRUISES IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC AND CENTRAL PACIFIC ABOARD E/V NAUTILUS AND 1 MOBILE DEPLOYMENT IN LAKE HURON, FOR A TOTAL OF 193 OPERATIONAL DAYS. THE E/VNAUTILUSBEGAN OFF THE COAST OF SAN PEDRO, CALIFORNIA AND MAPPED PARTS OF WEST COAST NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARIES TO SAN FRANCISCO, WHERE WE MOBILIZED A TWO-WEEK JOINT OCEANOGRAPHIC AND "OCEAN WORLDS" EXPEDITION AT GORDA RIDGE, RESULTING IN THE DISCOVERY OF A NEW HYDROTHERMAL VENT SITE, LEAD BY A TEAM ON SHORE. WE MAPPED SEAMOUNTS ON OUR WAY ACROSS THE PACIFIC TO HAWAII. FROM THERE WE CONDUCTED A BASIC EXPLORATION CRUISE CONSISTING OF MAPPING AND ROV CHARACTERIZATION IN SOME PREVIOUSLY UNEXPLORED REGIONS OF THE US LINE ISLANDS, RESULTING IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW BASELINE BENTHIC ORGANISM INVENTORIES ON SEVERAL RIDGES AND SEAMOUNTS. A SECOND BASIC EXPLORATION EXPEDITION MAPPED AND CHARACTERIZED PARTS OF THE HOWLAND AND BAKER UNIT AND JOHNSTON ATOLL UNIT OF THE PACIFIC REMOTE ISLANDS MARINE NATIONAL MONUMENT. ON BOTH OF THESE EXPEDITIONS WE DEPLOYED INSTRUMENTED WAVE BUOYS TO AID IN OBSERVATIONS IN REMOTE LOCATIONS. TWO EXPEDITIONS SEARCHED FOR LOST AIRCRAFT: THE PAN AM SAMOAN CLIPPER, LOST IN 1938 NORTH OF AMERICAN SAMOA, AND THE LOCKHEED ELEKTRA AIRCRAFT, AMELIA EARHART WAS FLYING, AND WHICH DISAPPEARED SOMEWHERE IN THE CENTRAL PACIFIC IN 1937. ALTHOUGH BOTH SEARCHES WERE UNSUCCESSFUL IN LOCATING THE LOST AIRCRAFT, HUNDREDS OF SQUARE KILOMETERS OF HIGH RESOLUTION MAPPING DATA AND HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF ROV VIDEO IMAGERY WERE OBTAINED ON THESE EXPEDITIONS. OET COLLABORATED WITH SEVERAL NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARIES, INCLUDING AMERICAN SAMOA, GREATER FARALLONES,CORDELL BANK, ANDMONTEREY BAY TO AID IN CHARACTERIZATION OF THESE PROTECTEDAREAS. IN ADDITION TO BIOLOGICAL AND GEOLOGICAL EXPLORATION, OET ALSO EXPERIMENTED WITH NEW SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGIES,INCLUDING A HIGH RESOLUTION MAPPING SYSTEM AT SUBMERGEDCAVES ON OSBORN BANK IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.ALL EXPLORATION PROGRAMS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF OUR TELEPRESENCE CAPABILITIES AND EXTENSIVE EDUCATION AND OUTREACH NETWORK TO REACH BROAD AUDIENCES.
