FTI WAS FORMED TO EDUCATE BUILDING INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS AND TO CONDUCT RESEARCH ON THE TOPIC OF BUILDING FACADES AND FACADE SYSTEMS. BUILDING FACADES COMBINE CONSIDERATIONS OF PERFORMANCE AND APPEARANCE, AND ENHANCEMENTS TO BUILDING FACADE (CONTINUE ON SCHEDULE O) TECHNOLOGY CAN MAKE BUILDINGS SAFER, MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE, MORE FUNCTIONAL AND COMFORTABLE FOR OCCUPANTS, AND MORE AESTHETICALLY PLEASING.
THE PRIMARY ACTIVITIES OF THE FACADE TECTONICS INSTITUTE, INC. ( REFERRED TO AS FTI) (SCH O CON) INCLUDE ORGANIZING CONFERENCES, FORUMS AND SIMILAR DISCUSSIONS AMONG BUILDING INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, ACADEMICS, ARCHITECTS, DEVELOPERS, OWNERS, MATERIAL SUPPLIERS AND FACADE FABRICATORS; CONDUCTING RESEARCH INTO THE LATEST BUILDING FACADE TECHNOLOGIES; AND PUBLISHING JOURNAL, SCHOLARLY ARTICLES, TECHNICAL GUIDES, RESEARCH REPORTS AND BOOKS. FTI'S CONFERENCES, ACTIVITIES, AND PUBLICATIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS ALIKE IN ORDER TO BENEFIT THE BUILDING INDUSTRY AND THE PUBLIC AT LARGE, AND TO IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE, ENERGY EFFICIENCY, COMFORT, FUNCTION AND SAFETY OF BUILDING FACADES AND FACADE SYSTEMS.
1. FTI CONVENED SIX FACADE TECTONICS FORUM EVENTS IN 2019, FIVE OF WHICH TOOK PLACE ON UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES. THESE INCLUDED FULL-DAY EVENTS IN MIAMI AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI ON MARCH 22, MINNEAPOLIS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA ON APRIL 15, TORONTO AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO ON MAY 3, SEATTLE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON ON JULY 16, HOUSTON AT RICE UNIVERSITY ON OCTOBER 10, AND A HALF-DAY PROGRAM IN NEW YORK CITY AT THE PRINCETON CLUB ON NOVEMBER 5. THESE EVENTS HAD REGISTRATIONS OF APPROXIMATELY 50, 75, 120, 100, 50 AND 175 RESPECTIVELY. POST-EVENT SURVEY DATA COLLECTED FOR EACH EVENT WAS EXTREMELY FAVORABLE.2. THE FTI RESEARCH COMMITTEE POSTED A REQUEST FOR (CONTINUE ON SCH O) RESEARCH CONCEPT BRIEFS TO EVALUATE INDUSTRY NEEDS AND CHALLENGES SURROUNDING FOUR KEY TOPIC AREAS: INDUSTRY STANDARDS, INTEGRATED FACADE DESIGN AND DELIVER, CALCULATION OF EMBODIED CARBON, AND HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND PRODUCTIVITY. THE REQUEST WAS MET WITH 8 PROPOSALS THAT WERE SUBJECTED TO AN INTENSIVE REVIEW BY THE RESEARCH COMMITTEE COMPRISED OF 24 PRACTITIONERS AND RESEARCHERS ACROSS THE AECO INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA. FTI WILL WORK WITH THE SELECTED RESEARCH TEAM TO IMPLEMENT THEIR PROPOSAL FOR RESEARCH INVENTORY FOR CIRCULAR FACADE DESIGN IN 2020.3. FTI ANNOUNCED A CALL FOR PAPERS IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2020 WORLD CONGRESS, WHICH WAS MET WITH OVER 200 ABSTRACT SUBMITTALS. THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS WERE SUBJECTED TO AN INTENSIVE BLIND PEER REVIEW PROCESS ADMINISTERED BY TWO UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PROFESSORS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE. THE REVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED BY AN INTERNATIONAL TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC REVIEW COMMITTEE COMPRISED OF OVER 300 PRACTITIONERS AND ACADEMICS ASSEMBLED BY FTI FOR THIS PURPOSE. APPROXIMATELY 100 PAPERS WERE ULTIMATELY QUALIFIED FOR ACCEPTANCE AND PRESENTATION. 4. TO HOUSE THE DIVERSE BODY OF 300+ TECHNICAL RESEARCH PAPERS PRESENTED AT PAST WORLD CONGRESS EVENTS (2016, 2018, AND THE UPCOMING 2020), FTI DEVELOPED AND LAUNCHED A ROBUST NEW WEBSITE IN 2019. THE WEBSITE INCLUDES A MOBILE FRIENDLY DATABASE FOR THE PAPERS AND AN ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURE BOTH CREATING BETTER ACCESS TO THE PAPERS. 5. FTI INDUCTED A SPECIAL ADVISORY COUNCIL COMPRISED OF 27 INDIVIDUALS SELECTED THROUGH A COMPETITIVE APPLICATION PROCESS. THE INDIVIDUALS EMBODY THE DISCIPLINARY AND GEOGRAPHIC DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE INSTITUTE'S MEMBERSHIP, INTERNATIONAL MISSION AND INCLUSIONARY PRACTICES. THE COUNCIL WILL FUNCTION AS A SUPPORTIVE BODY TO THE FTI BOARD OF DIRECTORS ON STRATEGIC INSTITUTE ISSUES AND INITIATIVES.6. FTI FORMED AN ADVOCACY COMMITTEE AND SUBMITTED 3 PROPOSALS IN RESPONSE TO THE US GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL'S NEW LEED V4 ANNOUNCEMENT INCLUDING RECOMMENDATIONS TO ADD A CREDIT FOR ASSESSING CONDENSATION RESISTANCE, A BUNDLING OPTION THAT ENSURES APPROPRIATE ENVELOPE PERFORMANCE, AND IMPROVED DELIVERY OF THERMAL COMFORT NEAR FACADES.
