PET ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY OF CT (PAWS), ESTABLISHED IN 1962, IS A NO-KILL ANIMAL RESCUE SHELTER DEDICATED TO THE RESCUE AND ADOPTION OF OUR COMMUNITY'S HOMELESS AND ABUSED DOGS AND CATS. PAWS EFFORTS ARE FOCUSED ON THREE CRITICAL NEEDS: (1) RESCUE & SAFE SHELTER; (2) MEDICAL AND BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT INCLUDING TNR (SPAY/NEUTER/RELEASE PROGRAM FOR FERAL CATS) AS WELL AS A SENIOR PET SUPPORT PROGRAM; AND (3) ADOPTION, CAREFULLY PLACING DOGS AND CATS WITH LOVING FAMILIES AND HOMES.

ADOPTIONS: DURING A DIFFICULT COVID-19 YEAR, PAWS TOOK IN 1,000 ANIMALS AND ADOPTED A RECORD NUMBER OF 989 TOTAL CATS AND DOGS. WITHOUT ADDING ADDITIONAL RESOURCES, PAWS ENDED THE YEAR WITH 764 CAT AND KITTEN ADOPTIONS (VERSUS 689 IN 2019) AND 225 DOG AND PUPPY ADOPTIONS (VERSUS 213 IN 2019) A TOTAL OF 989 CAT AND DOG ADOPTIONS IN 2020 VERSUS 902 CAT AND DOG ADOPTIONS IN 2019. IN-HOUSE SPAY/NEUTER SURGERIES: PAWS IN-HOUSE SURGERIES STRENGTHENED OUR MISSION AND ADOPTIONS BECAUSE ANIMALS COULD BE SPAY/NEUTERED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY UPON INTAKE, THUS REDUCING THE TIME SPENT AT PAWS WAITING FOR SPAY/NEUTER PROCEDURES BY ALMOST 1 WEEK. IN-HOUSE SPAY NEUTERS ALSO REDUCED THE STRESS OF TRANSPORT AND SAVED MONEY ON COSTLY EMERGENCY SURGERIES. 2018: BEFORE THE S/N CLINIC, 416 ANIMALS WERE S/N USING OUTSOURCED FACILITIES.2019: THE YEAR THAT THE S/N CLINIC WAS IMPLEMENTED. 284 ANIMALS WERE S/N IN-HOUSE VERSUS 282 ANIMALS OUTSOURCED.2020: 403 ANIMALS WERE S/N IN-HOUSE AND 132 WERE OUTSOURCED. ONE CAN SEE THE INCREASE IN THE S/N IN-HOUSE SURGERIES IN 2020. THIS NUMBER DOES NOT COUNT THE AMOUNT OF EMERGENCY SURGERIES WE COULD DO BECAUSE WE HAD THE SURGICAL EQUIPMENT (MASS REMOVALS, EMERGENCY C SECTIONS DURING PREGNANCY, ETC.) SENIOR PENSION PLAN: WITH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND AN AGING HUMAN POPULATION, PAWS EXPERIENCED A 33% INCREASE (IN 2020 FROM 2019) IN SURRENDERED ELDERLY ANIMALS BECAUSE THEIR OWNERS COULD NO LONGER CARE FOR THEM. PAWS ASPIRES TO SAVE ALL HEALTHY PETS, REGARDLESS OF AGE, AND NEEDS TO MEET THE CHALLENGE OF PLACING OLDER FRIENDS INTO NEW, LOVING HOMES. THE COMMON PERCEPTION IS THAT PEOPLE DON'T WANT OLDER ANIMALS BUT WE ARE FINDING A SMALL NICHE OF BENEVOLENT PEOPLE WHO WILL TAKE ON THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A SENIOR. 689 ADOPTIONS IN (35 SENIORS) 2018 902 ADOPTIONS (30 SENIORS) IN 2019989 ADOPTIONS (40 SENIORS) IN 2020
