STAR, INC., LIGHTING THE WAY, IS A NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATION SERVING INDIVIDUALS OF ALL AGES WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, AS WELL AS PROVIDING SUPPORT SERVICES TO THEIR FAMILIES. WE CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS TO LIVE FULL LIVES WITH INDEPENDENCE, FREEDOM OF CHOICE AND PERSONAL GROWTH BY PROVIDING SUPPORT, SERVICES AND ADVOCACY. WE INFORM AND ENCOURAGE THE COMMUNITY TO RECOGNIZE AND APPRECIATE THE VALUE OF ALL INDIVIDUALS.
TO PROVIDE LIVING ARRANGEMENTS AND DAY PROGRAM SERVICES FOR DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED PERSONS.
STAR RESIDENTIAL SERVICES ARE PROVIDED TO 90 INDIVIDUALS WITH I/DD IN A VARIETY OF OPTIONS: DDS LICENSED GROUP HOMES (64 ADULTS IN 12 HOMES); IN-HOME SUPPORT (8 ADULTS IN 6 APARTMENTS); LICENSED CLA'S: CLUSTERED APARTMENTS (12 ADULTS IN 9 APARTMENTS) AND SUPPORT IN THE INDIVIDUAL'S FAMILY HOME OR APARTMENT (6 ADULTS). RESIDENTIAL SUPPORTS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, SUPPORT IN ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING, MEAL PLANNING AND PREPARATION, ASSISTANCE IN PERSONAL CARE, HEALTH CARE, MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION, TRANSPORTATION AND/OR MOBILITY TRAINING, UP TO 24 HOURS/DAY OF SUPERVISION, RECREATION, AND COUNSELING. RESIDENTIAL SUPPORTS ARE INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED AND DRIVEN BY THE RESIDENTS' NEEDS. DUE TO COVID-19, RESIDENTS SPENT FROM MARCH THROUGH JUNE 30, LARGELY AT HOME-QUARANTINED, AS NECESSARY.
STAR PLACED 8 NEW PEOPLE IN COMPETITIVE EMPLOYMENT WITH 70 JOBS RETAINED FROM PREVIOUSLY PLACED. THE AVERAGE TENURE OF SUPPORTED STAR EMPLOYEES IS APPROXIMATELY 9.5 YEARS. STAR PARTICIPANTS IN DAY SUPPORT OPTIONS VOLUNTEERED OVER 2,000 HOURS IN THE COMMUNITY THIS YEAR. OVER 100 STAR PARTICIPANTS ACTIVELY JOIN IN AN ACTIVELY GROWING LIST OF CLASSES IN COMMUNITY SETTINGS. TWENTY FIVE PEOPLE AGES 48-85 PARTICIPATED IN STAR'S SENIOR/ADULT DAY PROGRAM. MORE THAN 20 INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATED IN STAR CONNECTIONS, A PROGRAM FOR ADULTS WITH COMPLEX MEDICAL NEEDS AND I/DD. THE STAR DAY PROGRAM (IN-PERSON PARTICIPATION) WAS NOT IN OPERATION FROM 3/16/20 TO 7/14/20 DUE TO STATE MANDATED COVID-19 CLOSURE. DURING THAT TIME, STAR OFFERED A ROBUST DAILY SCHEDULE OF ZOOM PROGRAMMING FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS USING COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN DANCE, ART, MUSIC, ETC. THE AGENCY PROVIDED IPADS FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY. STAR DAY PROGRAM HAS BEEN OPEN FOR IN-PERSON PARTICIPATION SINCE JULY PROVIDING FACILITY-BASED SERVICES WITH LIMITED COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN CLASSES AND VOLUNTEER WORK. THE ZOOM PROGRAM HAS CONTINUED FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE DECIDED TO REMAIN AT HOME. STAR IS PROVIDING JOB COACHING TO 30 INDIVIDUALS IN JOBS. MANY INDIVIDUALS HAVE DECIDED NOT TO RETURN TO THEIR JOBS OR HAVE BEEN LAID OFF. STAR JOB DEVELOPERS ARE WORKING TO RE-EMPLOY INDIVIDUALS WHO WERE IMPACTED BY COVID-19. THREE JOB PLACEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE.
FOR THE FISCAL YEAR, OVER 250 CHILDREN, AVERAGING 50-60 CHILDREN PER MONTH, MET THEIR DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES FROM STAR RUBINO FAMILY CENTER. DURING MARCH 2020, THE EARLY INTERVENTIONISTS IMPLEMENTED TELEHEALTH VISITS WHEN THE PANDEMIC STARTED. MOST FAMILIES CONTINUED SERVICES THROUGH REMOTE VISITS THAT ENGAGED AND SUPPORTED THE ENTIRE FAMILY. KEY STRATEGIES DELIVERED BY THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS, PHYSICAL THERAPISTS, SPEECH THERAPISTS, DEVELOPMENTAL THERAPISTS AND THE SOCIAL WORKER INCLUDED FOCUSING ON ALL FAMILY MEMBERS, EMBEDDING EARLY INTERVENTION IN TYPICAL DAILY ROUTINES AND FOLLOWING THE FAMILY'S LEAD. SOME FAMILIES MADE THE DECISION TO DISCONTINUE BIRTH TO THREE SERVICES DUE TO THE CHANGE OF ROUTINE IN THEIR HOME FROM THE PANDEMIC. REFERRALS DECREASED THROUGHOUT THE STATE AS FAMILIES WERE COPING WITH THE HEALTH AND ECONOMIC EMERGENCY.
