The Stamford Museum & Nature Center is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of art and popular culture, the natural and agricultural sciences, and history. The Museum is a vital cultural and educational resource for the community, and a focal point for family activity and interaction. We seek to inspire creativity, foster self-discovery, promote environmental stewardship, and nurture an appreciation for lifelong learning through exhibitions, educational programs, and special events that enhance the visitor's experience of our unique site.
Early Childhood EducationThe Art, Nature & Me Preschool is a State of Connecticut licensed child care program with 3-5 year old children enrolled in 38 weeks of actively learning about the natural world on SM&NC's engaging site. Eighty-four children participated in the school year's pre-school program. Total attendance of the pre-school school year and camp programs during the year was almost 9,000 visits.
Nature EducationThe SM&NC provides nature education to schools and the community. This year it presented over 2,500 family and school programs. The programs focus on the environment, astronomy, botany, geology, animal life and Indian lore. The SM&NC site serves as a dynamic teaching tool, with its 80 acres of hardwood forest trails, varied habitats, farm, and observatory. More than 50,000 participants shared in these educational programs.
Farm ProgramsThe SM&NC maintains a 16-acre working New England farm that is home to a variety of heritage breed farm animals. Hecksher farm is a tie to New England's agricultural past. This working farm allows visitors a unique look and interaction on the lessons of food production, animal care, and the inner-workings of a farm. Programs include a renowned Junior Curator program; programs for school, summer camp and scout groups; and internships for students who aspire to learn about animal husbandry. Almost every visitor to the SM&NC tours the farm to witness its range of animals. Program attendance was at least 75,000 during the year.
