THE NEW ENGLAND SCIENCE & SAILING FOUNDATION (NESS) HAS A UNIQUE EDUCATIONAL MODEL THAT USES THE OCEAN TO CREATE A LOVE OF LEARNING AND EMPOWER STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS IN LIFE. NESS REALIZES THOSE GOALS BY USING MARINE SCIENCES AND SAILING AS PLATFORMS TO DEVELOP POSITIVE LEARNING MINDSETS, INCREASING STUDENTS' CLASSROOM AND HOME ACHIEVEMENT ON AND OFF THE WATER. NESS'S IN-PERSON EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAMS, ACCREDITED BY THE NEW ENGLAND ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES, ARE DESIGNED TO DELIBERATELY BUILD STUDENTS' SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) AND PROMOTE THE GROWTH OF LEARNING MINDSETS. THAT INTENTIONALITY RESULTS IN PROGRAMS THAT INCREASE STUDENTS' CONFIDENCE, PERSEVERANCE, SELF-CONTROL, TEAMWORK, AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS, WHILE ALSO BUILDING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN STUDENTS, THEIR COMMUNITIES, AND A SUSTAINABLE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. VARIOUS STUDIES HAVE FOUND THAT LEARNING MINDSETS ARE AS, IF NOT MORE IMPORTANT, THAN SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUND OR THE SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE LEVE

NESS'S SCHOOL PROGRAMS SERVE STUDENTS K-12 THROUGH "PARTNERSHIPS" WITH SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND ORGANIZATIONS. PROGRAMS RANGE FROM ONE-DAY FIELD TRIPS OF 5 HOURS AT NESS IN STONINGTON, CT TO MULTIPLE EXPERIENCES IN THE CLASSROOM AND AT OTHER FIELD SITE LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR FOR 25-30 HOURS PER STUDENT. IN ALL DISTRICTS, NESS EDUCATORS WORK WITH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS TO MAXIMIZE THE EDUCATION EXPERIENCE FOR EACH GROUP, WHETHER IT BE IN THE FIELD OR THE CLASSROOM. THESE PROGRAMS ARE ALIGNED WITH NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS (NGSS) AND OCEAN LITERACY PRINCIPLES. PROGRAMS ALSO INTENTIONALLY TEACH FIVE SOCIO-EMOTIONAL FACTORS (COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, SELF-CONTROL, PERSEVERANCE, AND CONFIDENCE) THAT ARE VITAL SKILLS FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE.
NESS'S SUMMER CAMP INCLUDES OPEN ENROLLMENT SUMMER PROGRAMING AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH REGIONAL ORGANIZATIONS FOR STUDENTS AGES 4-17. THESE SEASONAL 10-WEEK PROGRAMS RUN JUNE-AUGUST AND ARE STAFFED BY FULL TIME AND SEASONAL EDUCATORS. STUDENTS CAN REGISTER FOR JUST ONE WEEK OR FOR THE ENTIRE SUMMER. CAMP PROGRAMS INCLUDE WEEKLY THEMES AND ARE AT A VARIETY OF SKILL LEVELS IN SAILING, MARINE SCIENCE, ADVENTURE SPORTS, AND POWERBOATING. LOCATIONS ARE PRIMARILY AT THE STONINGTON CAMPUS BUT ALSO INCLUDE VARIOUS FIELD LOCATIONS IN THE AREA.
NESS PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS AND FAMILIES TO PARTICIPATE IN HANDS-ON, EXPERIENTIAL PROGRAMS AND DEVELOPMENT. FIRST, THERE ARE ACCESS PROGRAMS SUCH AS SAILING, POWERBOATING, AND ADVENTURE SPORTS. THE PROGRAMS ARE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO COVER A PROGRESSION FROM NOVICE TO HIGH PERFORMANCE MASTER OF SKILLS AND CONTENT. THE SECOND TYPE OF PROGRAMS ARE TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, WHICH FOCUS ON PROVIDING INFORMAL EDUCATION TECHNIQUES TO K-12 SCHOOL TEACHERS. OFTEN THE TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IS UTILIZED TO PREPARE TEACHERS FOR UPCOMING FIELD AND CLASSROOM EXPEDITIONS WITH NESS.
