Circulating Library The Torrington Library operates as a public library, providing print books, periodicals, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, museum passes, video games, mobile hot spots, electronic resources/databases, eMaterials, and public access computers for public use. The library physically houses over 58,000 print books, 1,000 audiobooks, 2,200 DVDs, 200 CDs, 50 museum passes, and 2 mobile hot spots. Electronically, patrons have access to over two dozen reference databases, 5,000 eBooks, 1,200 eAudiobooks, 500 eVideos, and 40 eMagazines, all available from our website. All services are free of charge and available to any Torrington resident. Most services are also available to non-residents within Connecticut. In 2018, we saw 62,000 visits and close to 75,000 items borrowed.
Programming and Community Outreach The Torrington Library hosted 380 public events in 2019 for all demographics. Sample programs for adults include musical presenters, lecturers, authors talks, historical character portrayals, film showings, and craft nights. Programs for children and teens included story times, craft nights, books clubs, informational lectures, film showings, homeschooling clubs, art programs, and more. In 2019, program attendance reached over 12,500. The library also conducts off-site outreach. Here is just a sampling of the ways the library reaches out to the Community: Every year the library visits over 20 classrooms in the Torrington School district through outreach efforts. Librarians read a story to the children, present them with the book to keep in their classrooms, and send home a packet of informing with a library card registration form. Later in the week, students visit the library for a tour and return their library card application forms. The Library also hosts an after school bus from the Middle School to the library every Monday during the school year. Students can work on projects, finish homework, or read while at the library. In addition, librarians frequently visit the schools to conduct specialized outreach events that are curriculum based. The library also has a Baby's First Library Card program with Litchfield County Pediatrics. All parents of newborns receive a packet of information about getting their child's first library card! In the packet is a coupon to exchange for the child's first library card upon visiting the library. Parents will also receive a free board book when they visit the library.
Community Meeting Space The Torrington Library has two meeting rooms available for rent to public. The Torrington Savings Bank Community Room seats 110 and the Meeting Room seats 14. Not-for-profit and for-profit organizations can rent the spaces to hold events and meetings. The Library also features two quiet study rooms, a reading room, a rotunda, and a Program Room where the public can gather and meet on a daily basis, free of charge. Organizations that have used the library for meeting and/or party space include Torrington/Winsted Rotary, the Torrington Club, United Way, The Torrington Historical Society, Prime Time House, MADD, and more.
