Organizations Filed Purposes: THE PROJECT ON MIDDLE EAST DEMOCRACY (POMED) IS A NONPARTISAN, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO EXAMINING HOW GENUINE DEMOCRACIES CAN DEVELOP IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND HOW THE UNITED STATES CAN BEST SUPPORT THAT PROCESS. THROUGH DIALOGUE, RESEARCH, AND ADVOCACY, WE WORK TO STRENGTHEN THE CONSTITUENCY FOR U.S. POLICIES THAT PEACEFULLY SUPPORT DEMOCRATIC REFORM IN THE MIDDLE EAST

THE PROJECT ON THE MIDDLE EAST WORKS TO PROMOTE GENUINE DEMOCRACIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND HOW THE UNITED STATES CAN BEST SUPPORT THAT PROJECT.

CIVIL SOCIETY PARTNERSHIPS: THE CIVIL SOCIETY PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM COLLABORATES WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF NGOS IN THE REGION TO BUILD THE CAPACITY AND INCREASE THE IMPACT OF REGIONAL THINK TANKS AND ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS. BUILDING OFF ITS OWN EXPERIENCES, POMED GUIDES AND MENTORS ITS PARTNERS IN PRODUCING POLICY ANALYSIS AND DEVELOPING POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THEIR NATIONAL POLICYMAKERS, MIRRORING THE ROLE PLAYED BY POMED IN WASHINGTON. IN 2019, POMED HELPED SUPPORT THE WORK OF 10 ORGANIZATIONS LOCATED IN EGYPT, MOROCCO, TUNISIA, IRAQ, PALESTINE, AND LEBANON

ADVOCACY: THE ADVOCACY PROGRAM SUPPORTS A CONSISTENT AND CREDIBLE PRO-DEMOCRACY FOREIGN POLICY TOWARD THE MIDDLE EAST BY ORGANIZING INFORMATIONAL BRIEFINGS AND EVENTS FOR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AND THEIR STAFF; DEVELOPING CREDIBLE PRO-DEMOCRACY U.S. - POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS; DISCUSSING U.S. POLICY WITH LAWMAKERS AND EXECUTIVE BRANCH OFFICIALS; BRINGING KEY VOICES FROM THE MIDDLE EAST TO WASHINGTON TO ENGAGE DIRECTLY WITH POLICYMAKERS AND MEDIA; AND EMPOWERING THE DIVERSE COALITION OF ACTORS WHO SHARE OUR PRINCIPLES.

RESEARCH PROGRAM: THE RESEARCH PROGRAM PUBLISHES A SERIES OF FREQUENT POLICY BRIEFS, FEATURING LEADING THINKERS AND WRITERS ON ISSUES OF CORE RELEVANCE TO DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE MIDDLE EAST, IN ADDITION TO PUBLISHING A VARIETY OF OTHER BACKGROUND PAPERS AND BUDGET ANALYSES, AND TRACKING DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND IN WASHINGTON ON OUR BLOG AND IN EMAIL UPDATES. MAJOR REPORTS IN 2019 INCLUDED ANALYSIS ON TURKEY'S DEMOCRATIC BACKSLIDING, THE AUTHORITARIAN RULE OF EGYPT'S AL SISI, AND ANALYSIS ON TUNISIA'S PARLIAMENTARY AND PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.
