APPLY INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES AND INSTITUTIONAL APPROACHES TO IMPROVE THE LIVELIHOODS OF RURAL COMMUNITIES, PARTICULARLY THOSE OF SMALLHOLDER FARMERS, THROUGH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY BASED SUSTAINABLE MODELS OF GENDER-FOCUSED AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT FUNCTIONS OF THE ORGANIZATION.
STRENGTHENING SORGHUM AND MILLET VALUE CHAINS FOR FOOD, NUTRITIONAL AND INCOME SECURITY IN ARID AND SEMI-ARID LANDS OF KENYA AND TANZANIA (SOMNI) PROJECT. THE PROJECT'S OBJECTIVE IS TO IDENTIFY, DEVELOP AND TEST IMPROVED CULTIVARS OF SORGHUM AND INCREASE DRYLAND CEREAL PRODUCTION AND DRYLANDS PRODUCTIVITY FOR THE IMPROVED FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY, INCREASE HOUSEHOLD INCOMES WHILE PROTECTING THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENTS. THE PROJECT IS RUNNING FOR FOUR YEARS FROM 2016-2020.
COMMERCIALIZING RAPID-MULTIPLICATION TECHNOLOGIES, AND NEW BUSINESS MODELS THAT DRIVE PRIVATE SECTOR INVESTMENT INTO BANANA SEED SYSTEMS (RAPID PROGRAM) - 2019-2022MEDA AND CONTEXT GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT (CGD) WITH FUNDING FROM BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION ARE COLLABORATING TO COMMERCIALIZE SEED MULTIPLICATION TECHNOLOGIES, AND NEW MODELS THAT DRIVE PRIVATE SECTOR INVESTMENT INTO BANANA SEED SYSTEMS IN TANZANIA AND UGANDA. THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO GET NEW AND IMPROVED, HIGHER YIELDING VARIETIES OF BANANAS TO FARMERS IN UGANDA AND TANZANIA AT AN ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE PRICE. THIS IS TO BE DONE BY IDENTIFYING PROMISING TECHNOLOGIES IN RAPID MULTIPLICATION OF BANANAS, SUPPORTING PRIVATE SECTOR TO IMPROVE/UPSCALE THEM, UNDER A BEDROCK OF NEW BUSINESS MODELS THEREBY SPURRING INCREASED PRODUCTION OF QUALITY SEED IN BANANAS AND INTENSIFY FARMERS' ACCESS TO THE QUALITY BANANA SEED. AFRICA HARVEST PROVIDED CONSULTANCIES SERVICES TO THE PROJECT IN 2019, BY CARRYING OUT A RAPID APPRAISAL ON BANANA SEED SYSTEMS IN BOTH TANZANIA AND UGANDA.
AFRICA RICE-EARISS PROJECT (STRENGTHENING THE RICE SECTOR FOR POVERTY REDUCTION IN EAST AFRICA THROUGH IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY AND COMPETITIVENESS OF DOMESTIC RICE (EARISS). EARISS IS A 3 YEAR (2019-2022) RESEARCH FOR DEVELOPMENT (R4D) PROJECT FUNDED BY THE INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT (IFAD) AND IMPLEMENTED IN KENYA, UGANDA AND MADAGASCAR. THE AFRICA RICE CENTER IS THE LEAD GRANTEE INSTITUTION SUPPORTED BY AFRICA HARVEST BIOTECH FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL (AFRICA HARVEST)- THE REGIONAL PARTNER, AS WELL AS NATIONAL RESEARCH SYSTEMS IN THE COUNTRIES OF IMPLEMENTATION; KALRO, NARO AND FOFIFA IN KENYA, UGANDA AND MADAGASCAR, RESPECTIVELY.THE PROJECT AIMS TO ENHANCE BOTH PRODUCTIVITY AND COMPETITIVENESS OF LOCALLY PRODUCED RICE THROUGH TECHNOLOGIES AND INNOVATIONS, CAPACITY BUILDING AND ESTABLISHMENT OF FUNCTIONAL LINKAGES AMONG RICE VALUE CHAIN ACTORS IN KENYA, UGANDA AND MADAGASCAR. TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY AND COMPETITIVENESS OF LOCALLY PRODUCED RICE, THE CAPACITY OF RICE VALUE CHAIN ACTORS WILL BE BUILT IN PRODUCTION, POSTHARVEST AND MARKETING STRATEGIES.ABOUT 18,000 STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING RICE FARMERS, SEED PRODUCERS, EXTENSION SERVICE PROVIDERS, PROCESSORS AND NATIONAL RESEARCH STAFF IN KENYA, UGANDA AND MADAGASCAR ARE EXPECTED TO BENEFIT DIRECTLY FROM THIS PROJECT. AT LEAST 40% OF THIS TARGET GROUP ARE EXPECTED TO BE WOMEN, AND AT LEAST 20% YOUTH, AGED 15-35 YEARS. THE OUTPUTS OF THE PROJECT WILL BE RELEVANT FOR AT LEAST 100,000 RICE-FARMING HOUSEHOLDS IN EAST AFRICA.
