ATIS develops and promotes global technical and operations standards for the information, communications, and technologies industries.
ATIS' Innovation Agenda defines ATIS' overarching technology strategy, direction, and priorities for both the organization and the future of the industry, while also facilitating member idea-sharing and education. 2019 accomplishments include: 1. ATIS' 5G work is extensive. As the North American organizational partner to 3GPP, ATIS works with its members to Advance North American leadership and development of 5G requirements, including the critical security needs surrounding 5G networks and applications. The commitment to advancing 5G is reflected across ATIS' broad set of Board initiatives and standards committee activities. The 5G Supply Chain Working Group (WG) was launched to operationalize supply chain requirements into a process that provides assurance and certification of 5G infrastructure and devices to a common set of supply chain standards. These requirements are being developed with strong industry participation to assure that they can be widely adopted and practically implemented into supply chain practices. The output of this work will ultimately lead to a common certification process for 5G infrastructure, assuring that a collective set of supply chain requirements are applied in a consistent manner across trusted suppliers and operators of 5G systems. 2. An Architectural Risk Analysis for Internet of Things (IoT) Services Report was published in March, 2019. Building upon the Architectural Risk Analysis process, this report explored a detailed and systematic analysis of threats to new or existing service IoT solutions, and the development of appropriate risk mitigation. The report contains a detailed assessment of network-based IoT cybersecurity, and provides both insight into effective security measures for IoT, as well as an excellent model/example that can be used by operator and vendor network solution development organizations to assess the security risks of any real solution. 3. The industry and regulators continue to work on solutions to address the communication needs of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and to ensure their safe operation. A 2019 ATIS report reviews this work in light of its potential to help define 3GPP Release 17 standards and requirements for UAV use of cellular networks. "Use of Cellular Communications to Support Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Flight Operations" addresses four technical areas in which communications technology can assist in addressing flight operations of UAVs: 1) the Command and Control inteface; 2) UAV Traffic Management; 3) Remote UAV Identification; and 4) Detect and Avoid.
The ATIS Technology and Operations (TOPS) Council identifies the industry's most pressing technical and operational priorities and coordinates standardization efforts across the industry to produce interoperable, implementable, end-to-end solutions. 1. The 2019 ATIS report, "IoT Categorization: Exploring the Need for Additional Standardized Network Slices", considers the network requirements across the multidimensional landscape of IoT devices and applications to identify any additional network slice types that may be defined to ensure consistent service quality across operators. The IoT Categorization report provides a comprehensive analysis of the multidimensional landscape of IoT across devices and applications to ensure a broad set of standardized slice types to address the most commonly used services and associated performance characteristics.
The ATIS Wireless Technologies and Systems Committee develops wireless radio, access system, and network solutions related to wireless and/or mobile services and systems. WTSC develops and continues to enhance solutions to support a U.S. public warning system and wireless emergency alert system. In 2019, a new group of ATIS standards created WEA 3.0, which supported the delivery of potentially life-saving messages in a more precise geographic range and more accurately target at-risk populations while minimizing disruption to others. Specifically, WEA 3.0 advances: 1) Geographic Accuracy; 2) Longer Messages and Better Reach; 3) A new class of alerts for officials to convey recommendations for saving lives or property, such as the location of emergency shelters after a disaster; and 4) better testing.
