ALPHAMUNDI FOUNDATION, INC. (THE FOUNDATION) IS A WASHINGTON, DC BASED NON-PROFIT WITH A MISSION TO CATALYZE AND SCALE INVESTMENT IN SOCIAL ENTERPRISES THAT SEEK TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THE POOR. POWERING AGRICULTURE - THE POWERING AGRICULTURE INVESTMENT ALLIANCE (THE "ALLIANCE") HAS AN OBJECTIVE TO ACCELERATE THE DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT OF CLEAN ENERGY INNOVATIONS THAT IMPROVE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY IN EMERGING MARKETS BY INCREASING THE DISTRIBUTION AND SUPPLY OF EXISTING AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES. THE FOUNDATION JOINED THE ALLIANCE IN MARCH OF 2018 TO HELP COMMERCIALLY VIABLE COMPANIES GROW AND SCALE BY IMPROVING THEIR INVESTMENT-READINESS AND INCREASING THEIR ACCESS TO PRIVATE SECTOR CAPITAL. THE ALLIANCE IS THE LARGEST PROGRAM FOR THE FOUNDATION WITH ACTIVITIES INCLUDING PROVIDING: (1) CATALYTIC TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND BUSINESS ADVISORY SUPPORT; (2) R&D GRANTS TO CONDUCT CUSTOMER RESEARCH AND PILOT AND TEST NEW PRODUCTS AND SERVICES; AND (3) OPERATIONAL SUPPORT AND INNOVATIVE BLENDED FINANCE STRUCTURES (E.G. RECOVERABLE GRANTS AND FIRST LOSS FACILITIES) TO SOCIAL ENTERPRISES IMPACTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.
G-SEARCH - THE GENDER SMART ENTERPRISE ASSISTANCE RESEARCH COALITION (G-SEARCH) IS THE FOUNDATION'S FLAGSHIP IMPACT INVESTING FIELD BUILDING EFFORT. G-SEARCH COMPRISES A GROUP OF SIX, LIKE-MINDED, IMPACT INVESTORS COMMITTED TO INVESTING WITH A GENDER LENS. CONSORTIUM MEMBERS INCLUDE ACUMEN, SEAF, ROOT CAPITAL, AHL VENTURE PARTNERS, AND SHELL FOUNDATION; AND EACH MEMBER SUPPORTS PORTFOLIO AND PRIORITY PIPELINE COMPANIES WITH GRANT CAPITAL TO INTEGRATE GENDER CONSIDERATIONS ACROSS THEIR BUSINESS MODELS. THE FOUNDATION HAS SECURED FUNDING FROM CANADA'S INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH CENTER (IDRC) TO COMMISSION A RESEARCH PROJECT TO BUILD THE BASE OF EVIDENCE FOR THIS APPROACH. DURING 2020, THE FOUNDATION ISSUED AN RFP, ADMINISTERED A COMPETITIVE PROCUREMENT PROCESS AND SELECTED THE WILLIAM DAVIDSON INSTITUTE (WDI) FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN AS THE RESEARCH PARTNER FOR THIS INITIATIVE. G-SEARCH WILL LAUNCH THE FIRST LEARNING PRODUCT IN FEBRUARY 2021 AND FINAL RESEARCH PRODUCT IN Q2 2022.
INVEST GENDER TA - WITH SUPPORT FROM DAI'S INVEST PROGRAM AND WITH FUNDING FROM USAID, THE FOUNDATION IS PARTNERING WITH VALUE FOR WOMEN TO SUPPORT BUSINESS FIRST, GENDER-SMART TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE INTERVENTIONS WITH NINE ALPHAMUNDI GROUP PORTFOLIO COMPANIES IN EAST AFRICA AND LATIN AMERICA. THESE INTERVENTIONS ARE GEARED TO ADDRESS SME OPERATIONAL AND BUSINESS CHALLENGES WITH A GENDER LENS. CUSTOMIZED STRATEGIES KICKED OFF IN OCTOBER 2020 AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH JULY 2021.
