Organizations Filed Purposes:
GLMA IS A NATIONAL ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO ENSURING HEALTH EQUITY FOR LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER, QUEER (LGBTQ) AND ALL SEXUAL AND GENDER MINORITY (SGM) INDIVIDUALS, AND EQUALITY FOR LGBTQ/SGM HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN THEIR WORK AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS. TO ACHIEVE THIS MISSION, GLMA UTILIZES THE SCIENTIFIC EXPERTISE OF ITS DIVERSE MULTIDISCIPLINARY MEMBERSHIP TO INFORM AND DRIVE ADVOCACY, EDUCATION, AND RESEARCH.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES - THROUGH A MULTITUDE OF ACTIVITIES, GLMA SEEKS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF LGBTQ PATIENTS BY EDUCATING PROVIDERS AND ALL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, PATIENTS THEMSELVES AND POLICYMAKERS AT ALL LEVELS ABOUT THE SPECIFIC HEALTH NEEDS OF LGBTQ PEOPLE. A CENTRAL COMPONENT OF GLMA'S EDUCATIONAL WORK IS THE GLMA ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON LGBTQ HEALTH, THE WORLD'S LARGEST SCIENTIFIC MEETING FOCUSING ON LGBTQ HEALTH, HELD IN LAS VEGAS IN 2018. MORE THAN 450 PARTICIPANTS FROM AROUND THE U.S. AND WORLD ATTENDED THE ANNUAL CONFERNECE, WHICH OFFERS CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR A BROAD VARIETY OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN ALL ASPECTS OF LGBTQ HEALTH.
LESBIAN HEALTH FUND - GLMA'S LESBIAN HEALTH FUND (LHF) MAKES DIRECT GRANTS TO FUND LESBIAN HEALTH RESEARCH AND IS THE WORLD'S ONLY RESEARCH FUND SOLELY DEDICATED TO THE UNIQUE HEALTH NEEDS OF LESBIANS AND SEXUAL MINORITY WOMEN. IN 2018, LHF AWARDED FOUR GRANTS TOTALING ALMOST $35,000 TO SUPPORT LESBIAN HEALTH RESEARCH, SPECIFICALLY TO STUDY SEXUAL HEALTH AMONG LESBIAN AND BISEXUAL BLACK WOMEN WHO HAVE SEM WITH MEN, IMPLICIT AND EXPLCIT HEALTHCARE PROVIDER BIAS TOWARD SEXUAL MINORITY WOMEN, INTERVENTIONS TO RECUCE MINORITY STRESS IN SEXUAL MINORITY WOMEN, SEXUAL MINORITY GIRLS' EXPERIENCES OF BEING SUPPORT AND AFFIRMED BY SCHOOL STAFF. SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1992, LHF HAS PROVIDED NEALRY MORE $950,000 IN FUNDING FOR THIS IMPORTANT RESEARCH. LHF GRANTEES HAVE GONE ON TO SECURE TENS OF MILLION DOLLARS MORE IN ADDITIONAL FUNDING FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES FOR FOLLOW-ON STUDIES, MADE POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF FINDINGS FROM THEIR LHF-FUNDED RESEARCH.
POLICY AND ADVOCACY - GLMA'S POLICY AND ADVOCACY EFFORTS SEEK TO INFLUENCE AND ESTABLISH POLICIES TO ADDRESS LGBTQ HEALTH CONCERNS AT THE LOCAL, INSTITUTION AND GOVERNMENT LEVELS. IN 2018, GLMA WORKED IN COALITION TO, AMONG OTHER EFFORTS: PRESERVE NONDISCRIMINATION PROTECTIONS UNDER THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT FOR TRANSGENDER AND LESBIAN, GAY AND BISEXUAL PEOPLE; SUPPORT INCLUSION OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY QUESTIONS IN ELECTORNIC HEALTH RECORDS AND NATIONAL POPULATION-BASED SURVEYS; OPPOSE EFFORTS TO EXPAND THE ABILITY OF HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS TO REFUSE CASE TO LGBTQ PEOPLE, WOMEN AND OTHER COMMUNITIES BASED ON RELIGIOUS OBJECTIONS; PROMOTE EDUCATION AND AWARENESS ABOUT THE HUMAN RIGHTS AND HEALTH NEEDS OF INTERSEX PEOPLE; ADVOCATE REMOVAL OF ARBITRARY EXCLUSIONS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE FOR CARE OF TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS; SUPPORT EFFORTS TO ENSURE HEALTH PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS AND HEALTH PROFESSIONALS RECEIVE TRAINING AND EDUCATION IN LGBTQ HEALTH; ENSURE THAT POLICIES RELATED TO HIV ARE INFORMED BY THE MOST UP-TO-DATE SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CARE AND TREATMENT OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV; ADDRESS ANTI-LGBTQ BIAS AND DISCRIMINATION IN THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, INCLUDING HOSPITALS AND OTHER HEALTHCARE SETTINGS; AND SUPPORT RESEARCH INITIATIVES INTO LGBTQ HEALTH BY THE NIH AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS.
