THE AMERICAN FOREST FOUNDATION HELPS FAMILY WOODLAND OWNERS PROTECT AND MEASURABLY INCREASE THE CLEAN WATER, WILDLIFE HABITAT AND SUSTAINABLE WOOD SUPPLIES THAT COME FROM FAMILY-OWNED FORESTS.

WOODLANDSAFF ENGAGES TENS OF THOUSANDS OF LANDOWNERS AND COLLABORATES WITH HUNDREDS OF ON-THE-GROUND AGENCY, NONPROFIT, AND CORPORATE PARTNERS TO PROMOTE AND SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT TO PROTECT CLEAN WATER SUPPLIES, REDUCE WILDFIRE RISKS, CONSERVE AT-RISK SPECIES, AND INCREASE SUSTAINABLE WOOD SUPPLIES. IN 2018, AFF'S PROGRAMS GENERATED MEANINGFUL IMPACT THROUGH THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:-- ADDED 6,477 NEW TREE FARMS TO THE AMERICAN TREE FARM SYSTEM, INCREASING SUSTAINABLY MANAGED LAND IN THE PROGRAM BY MORE THAN 1,544,000 ACRES.-- IMPROVED 29,000 ACRES OF FAMILY WOODLANDS THROUGH PLACE-BASED CONSERVATION WORK FOCUSED ON IMPROVING WATER QUALITY WHILE REDUCING WILDFIRE RISK, IMPROVING AT-RISK WILDLIFE HABITAT IMPROVEMENT, AND INCREASING SUSTAINABLE WOOD SUPPLIES. -- ACQUIRED DIGITAL PLATFORM WOODSCAMP, INVESTING IN AN INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY STRATEGY AND FURTHER ACCELERATE LANDOWNER ENGAGEMENT BY REMOVING BARRIERS TO ACTION. THE WOODSCAMP PLATFORM OFFERS A MORE INTELLIGENT AND EFFICIENT WAY TO REACH GREATER NUMBERS OF FAMILY FOREST OWNERS AND HELPS CONNECT THEM TO SERVICES AND PROGRAMS IN THEIR LOCAL AREA AND TAKE ACTION TO SUSTAINABLY MANAGE THEIR WOODLANDS. IN 2018, WOODSCAMP WAS LAUNCHED IN THREE STATES, ENGAGING MORE THAN 3,000 LANDOWNERS REPRESENTING 153,000 ACRES OF LAND.-- AWARDED CAL FIRE FOREST HEALTH GRANT TO REACH MORE THAN 10,000 NONINDUSTRIAL, PRIVATE LANDOWNERS AND ENGAGE THEM IN WILDFIRE RISK REDUCTION AND FOREST RESTORATION FOR CARBON BENEFITS, RESULTING IN MORE THAN 720 PROJECTS ACROSS MORE THAN 42,000 ACRES. THE MY SIERRA WOODS PROGRAM WILL USE WOOD PRODUCTS MARKETS TO OFFSET PROJECT COSTS, PROVIDE LANDOWNERS WITH REIMBURSEMENTS FOR FUELS-REDUCTION ACTIVITIES, AND FACILITATE REFORESTATION ON PROPERTIES IN NEEDED LOCATIONS.-- RECEIVED AWARD FROM U.S. NATURAL CLIMATE SOLUTIONS ACCELERATOR PROGRAM TO CATALYZE NEW APPROACHES TO ADDRESS CARBON POLLUTION THROUGH NATURAL SOLUTIONS. THE AMERICAN FOREST FOUNDATION AND THE NATURE CONSERVANCY ARE DEVELOPING A NEW PROGRAM, THE FAMILY FOREST CARBON INITIATIVE, TO MOBILIZE THE VALUE OF FOREST CARBON FOR SMALLER LAND OWNERS TO UNLOCK MAJOR CARBON SEQUESTRATION POTENTIAL.-- LAUNCHED FIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH NATIONAL FISH AND WILDLIFE FOUNDATION IN THE NORTHEAST TO ENGAGE FOREST OWNERS IN ACTIONS THAT ESTABLISH, ENHANCE, OR RESTORE ROUGHLY 25,000 ACRES OF FOREST HABITAT FOR AT-RISK SPECIES. -- LAUNCHED PARTNERSHIP WITH AUDUBON SOCIETY, DOMTAR AND OTHER NATIONAL AND LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TO ASSIST PRIVATE WOODLAND OWNERS IN THE NORTHEAST, WITH A GOAL TO DIRECTLY TREAT 750 ACRES OF HABITAT FOR AT-RISK BIRD SPECIES. -- EXPANDED THE LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT PLAN PILOT PROGRAM TO MORE LANDOWNERS IN FLORIDA AND ALABAMA WHICH HAS REMOVED ONE OF THE LARGEST BARRIERS FOR FAMILY FOREST OWNER CERTIFICATION AND FOCUSES LANDOWNERS ON BEST FOREST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES.-- DEVELOPED AND DEPLOYED NEW SET OF TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGIES THAT HELP FORESTERS AND REDUCE BARRIERS TO LANDOWNER PARTICIPATION IN FOREST CERTIFICATION WHILE ENSURING RIGOROUS SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS ARE MET, AND LONG-TERM ENGAGEMENT OF FAMILY WOODLAND OWNERS THAT LEADS TO IMPROVED FOREST STEWARDSHIP. THESE TOOLS WERE PILOTED IN TARGETED REGIONS TO TEST AND INFORM THEIR EXPANSION IN ADDITIONAL LANDSCAPES IN 2019.-- ATTAINED DUTCH SUSTAINABILITY RECOGNITION FOR THE AMERICAN TREE FARM SYSTEM CERTIFICATION, PROVIDING FAMILY FOREST OWNERS ACCESS TO INTERNATIONAL MARKETS AND SUPPORTS SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT ON PRIVATE LAND FOR MEANINGFUL IMPACT ON WILDLIFE AND HABITAT.-- LAUNCHED DEVELOPMENT, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GREENBLUE, ESRI, THE US FOREST SERVICE AND A COALITION OF CONSUMER BRANDS AND FOREST PRODUCT COMPANIES, OF A NEW FOREST SUSTAINABILITY TOOL THAT COMPLEMENTS FOREST CERTIFICATION. THE DIGITAL MAPPING TOOL, FORESTS IN FOCUS, ASSESSES THE SUSTAINABILITY OF FAMILY-OWNED FORESTS AT THE LANDSCAPE-LEVEL, ENCOURAGING FOREST PRODUCT COMPANIES TO SOURCE FROM FAMILY-OWNED FORESTS AND SUPPORT ON-THE-GROUND CONSERVATION WORK TO REACH THEIR SUSTAINABILITY GOALS.-- FORMED PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FOREST TRUST TO ENABLE BRANDS TO MORE SEAMLESSLY ENGAGE IN ON-THE-GROUND WORK WITH PRIVATE LANDOWNERS TO TRANSFORM THEIR SUPPLY CHAINS AND DRIVE POSITIVE OUTCOMES IN THE PLACES THEY SOURCE WOOD. THE WORK WILL ALSO SUPPORT MARKETS THAT ENCOURAGE FAMILY FOREST OWNERS TO TAKE CONSERVATION ACTION IN THEIR WOODS.-- LAUNCHED A NATIONAL COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE INITIATIVE TO BRING TOGETHER AFF PARTNERS TO COLLABORATE AND SHARE LANDOWNER ENGAGEMENT LEARNINGS TO BUILD A STRONGER, MORE CONNECTED NETWORK AND INCREASE THE IMPACT OF ALL PARTNERSHIPS.-- SECURED FUNDING FROM THE NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE (NRCS) OVER TWO YEARS TO ADD MUCH-NEEDED FORESTER CAPACITY IN TWO PRIORITY STATES, OREGON AND COLORADO. -- CONTINUED WORK THROUGH OUR ADVOCACY LEADERS PROGRAM AND THE FORESTS IN THE FARM BILL COALITION TO ORGANIZE AND ADVOCATE FOR FOREST PROVISIONS IN THE 2018 FARM BILL REAUTHORIZATION, WHICH WAS SIGNED INTO LAW IN LATE 2018.-- ADVOCATED FOR WILDFIRE FUNDING FIX THAT ENSURES BUDGETED DOLLARS CAN BE SPENT ON IMPLEMENTING IMPORTANT FOREST PRACTICES THAT WILL ASSIST IN PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF WILDFIRES, INVASIVE INSECTS, AND DISEASE. -- ENGAGED AND EDUCATED POLICYMAKERS ON LEGISLATION AND PROGRAMS FOR MARKETS, DISASTER RECOVERY, AND TAX PROVISIONS THAT HELP FAMILY FOREST OWNERS SUSTAINABLY MANAGE THEIR LAND. AFF CONTINUES TO BUILD ON ITS POSITION AS A TRUSTED ADVISOR AND INNOVATOR TO FURTHER ACCELERATE AND EXPAND THE ORGANIZATION'S REACH TO LANDOWNERS, INFLUENCE WITH PARTNERS, AND IMPACT ON THE GROUND.

EDUCATION:PROJECT LEARNING TREE (PLT) WAS TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DURING 2017 TO POSITION IT FOR BETTER FUTURE GROWTH AND SUCCESS. THE SMALL AMOUNT OF EXPENDITURES DURING 2018 REPRESENTS THE FINAL WORK ON A GRANT ON WHICH PLT AS A SUBAWARDEE OF AFF.
