AS PART OF A 5-YEAR BOARD-LED ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE TO ACTIVATE U.S. HUMBOLDT ALUMNI, AFAVH IN 2019: (I) CONTACTED 291 HUMBOLDTIANS AT OVER 37 ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS IN NEARLY ALL REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES, WITH 142 CONTACTS MADE THROUGH PERSONAL CALLS OR CONVENED EVENTS TO EXPLORE THE ALUMNI EXPERIENCE; (II) WITH THE CENTER FOR GERMAN AND EUROPEAN STUDIES/INSTITUTE OF EUROPEAN STUDIES AT UC BERKELEY HOSTED A RECEPTION FOR 35 U.S. HUMBOLDT ALUMNI ON THE BERKELEY CAMPUS; (III) WITH THE GERMAN EMBASSY, ORGANIZED A LECTURE AND RECEPTION FEATURING ANDREA WULF, THE AUTHOR OF A BIOGRAPHY ON ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT ATTENDED BY ALUMNI AND MEMBERS OF THE GERMAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY; AND IDENTIFIED LOCAL ALUMNI IN GERMANY IN 1989 FOR THE OCT. 3RD CELEBRATION OF "GERMAN UNITY DAY; (IV) WORKED WITH U.S. ALUMNI IN ACADEMIA TO DEVELOP A HOW-TO GUIDE FOR LIFELONG ENGAGEMENT ACROSS ALL CAREER STAGES; (V) ASSISTED THE GERMAN CONSULATE IN SAN FRANCISCO IN OUTREACH TO 500+ ALUMNI IN THE BAY AREA; (VI) WITH THE AVH, THE GERMAN ACADEMIC INTERNATIONAL NETWORK (GAIN) AND GERMAN EMBASSY, PLANNED ACTIVITIES AT THE ANNUAL GAIN MEETING OF OVER 400 RESEARCHERS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, AND SCIENCE FUNDERS IN SAN FRANCISCO; (VII) ADVISED U.S. ALUMNI ORGANIZING AVH "KOLLEGS; (VIII) ADVERTISED RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AND AWARDS IN WEBINARS, DISTRIBUTED INFORMATION THROUGH E-MAIL AND SOCIAL MEDIA, AND PARTICIPATED IN 6 PROFESSIONAL OR SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS, PROVIDING OVER 300 INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATIONS TO POTENTIAL APPLICANTS; AND (IX) PRESENTED INFORMATION ON GERMAN RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES DURING CAMPUS VISITS IN WASHINGTON STATE, CALIFORNIA, AND NEW YORK.
STRATEGIC PLANNING-OUTREACH:AFAVH PROVIDES SERVICE TO THE ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT FOUNDATION (AVH) IN THE DELIVERY OF MEASURES TO RAISE THE VISIBILITY OF THE HUMBOLDT FOUNDATION AND ALUMNI NETWORK, FORGE NEW STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, AND FACILITATE TRANSATLANTIC EXCHANGES ON SCIENCE AND SCIENCE POLICY. IN 2019, AFAVH: (I) WITH THE AVH, CELEBRATED THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT'S BIRTH AND HIS LEGACY THROUGH SPECIAL FEATURES ON THE WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA; (II) SUPPORTED THE FORUM ON THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES ON "THE POWER OF (ACADEMIC) NETWORKS" IN BERLIN, GERMANY DEC. 8-10, 2019, AN ANNUAL MEETING OF 70+ INTERNATIONAL RESEARCHERS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF SCIENTIFIC NGOS EXPLORING ISSUES IN SCIENCE AND SCIENCE POLICY; SUGGESTED AND ASSISTED WITH RECRUITMENT OF SPEAKERS, AND PROVIDED LOGISTICAL AND TRAVEL SUPPORT FOR U.S. ATTENDEES; (III) WITH THE AVH AND AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION, PLANNED A SPECIAL SESSION ON ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT'S IMPACT ON THE GEOSCIENCES AT THE ANNUAL AGU MEETING; (IV) SHARED INFORMATION ON THE HUMBOLDT NETWORK AND INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE COOPERATION AT INVITED OR PUBLIC EVENTS, INCLUDING THOSE OF THE AAAS, ACS, RGIT, GOETHE INSTITUTE, EUROPEAN DELEGATION TO THE U.S., FRIEDRICH EBERT FOUNDATION, GCRI, GERMAN CONSULATES (NEW YORK AND SAN FRANCISCO), GERMAN HISTORICAL INSTITUTE, GERMAN MARSHALL FUND, GERMAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION, NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION; (V) MAINTAINED A STRONG SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE TO SHARE HUMBOLDTIANS' ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND INFORMATION ON GERMAN RESEARCH; (VI) INFORMED SENIOR INTERNATIONAL AND RESEARCH ADMINISTRATORS AT U.S. UNIVERSITIES.
ALUMNI SUPPORT AND OUTREACH FOR THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (BUKA):AFAVH PROVIDES SERVICE TO THE ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT FOUNDATION (AVH) TO SUPPORT THE NEARLY 300 U.S. ALUMNI OF THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR FELLOWSHIP FOR YOUNG LEADERS IN BUSINESS, PUBLIC POLICY, PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, AND ARTS AND CULTURE. IN 2019, AFAVH: (I) COLLECTED AND DISSEMINATED ALUMNI STORIES TO SHOWCASE THE PROFESSIONAL IMPACT OF THE FELLOWSHIP; (II) ADVERTISED THE PROGRAM THROUGH E-MAIL PROMOTIONS TO 5,200 RECIPIENTS, SOCIAL MEDIA, AND PARTICIPATION IN 4 CAREER FAIRS; (III) PROVIDED POTENTIAL CANDIDATES INFORMATION ON THE APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS; (IV) PROVIDED LOGISTICAL SUPPORT TO U.S. ALUMNI ATTENDING THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR FELLOWSHIP ALUMNI MEETING IN HANGZHOU, CHINA (MARCH 22-24); (V) WITH U.S. "PROGRAM AMBASSADORS AND AVH LEADERS, DEVELOPED A STRATEGY TO RECRUIT A MORE INCLUSIVE POOL OF APPLICANTS; AND (VI) UNDER A 5-YEAR BOARD-LED ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE TO ACTIVATE THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR FELLOWS NETWORK BEGAN DEVELOPING A HOW-TO GUIDE FOR LIFELONG ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT.
