THE MISSION OF THE ANACOSTIA COMMUNITY OUTREACH CENTER IS TO PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE ARRAY OF INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SERVICES WHICH CREATE A NETWORK OF CORE SUPPORTS TO REDUCE POVERTY, STRENGTHEN FAMILIES, IMPROVE COMMUNITIES AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF REALISTIC OPTIONS FOR INDIVIDUALS TO SUCCEED IN LIFE.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING MARRIAGE FIRST PROJECT PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND COUPLES SUPPORT TO DC MARRIED COUPLES WITH CHILDREN LIVING IN THE HOME. MARRIED COUPLES WITH CHILDREN ARE ASSISTED TO PAY RENT/MORTGAGE, UTILITIES, CHILD CARE ASSISTANCE, AS WELL AS ORDINARY LIVING EXPENSES SUCH AS FOOD, CLOTHING, AND TRANSPORTATION. THE PROJECT SUPPORTS AND ENCOURAGES THE FORMATION OF TWO-PARENT MARRIED HOUSEHOLDS THROUGH STRUCTURED MARRIAGE EDUCATION, HOME OWNERSHIP AND HOUSEHOLD FINANCIAL LITERACY CLASSES. FOOD PANTRY PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE BAGGED GROCERIES TO HUNGRY FAMILIES, SENIORS, AND SINGLE ADULTS. THE PROGRAM IS SUPPORTED BY ALL-VOLUNTEER STAFF AND FOOD DONATIONS THAT COME TO THE CENTER THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF INDIVIDUALS AND THE CENTER'S CORPORATE PARTNERS. ON AVERAGE, THE PROGRAM HANDS OUT APPROXIMATELY 600 BAGS OF GROCERIES PER MONTH.

CHILDREN ENRICHMENT THE CENTER SEEKS TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND ACADEMICALLY ENGAGING ENVIRONMENT IN ITS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AND SUMMER CAMP. SERVING STUDENTS FROM THIRD THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE, THE GOAL IS TO STRENGTHEN THE STUDENTS ACADEMICALLY AND ADDRESS KEY DEFICIENCIES IN THEIR SKILLS AND LEARNING. THROUGH THE PROGRAM, THE CENTER PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT WITH ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING, HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE, AND MORE FUN AND STIMULATING ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING FIELD TRIPS, ART/MUSIC CLASSES, PHYSICAL E

ADULT EDUCATION AND TRAINING THE CENTER OPERATES ONE OF THE DISTRICT'S OFFICE OF THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION (OSSE) FUNDED ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE) AND GRADUATE EQUIVALENCY DEGREE (GED) PREPARATORY PROGRAM. OUR HIGHLY TRAINED AND DEDICATED STAFF AND VOLUNTEER TUTORS PROVIDE ADULT LEARNERS, AGES 18 AND OLDER, WITH ABE AND GED EDUCATIONAL INSTRUCTION IN A CLASSROOM SETTING. THE CENTER'S GED PREPARATION CLASSES (1 TO 12 MONTH SELF-PACED PROGRAM) OFFERS BOTH AN INDEPENDENT STUDY COMPONE
