The Bonobo Peace Forest: an integrated network of community-managed forest reserves and concessions, spanning a vast area of rainforest habitat. Includes two nationally gazetted nature reserves: Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve and Sankuru Nature Reserve, together spanning almost 9 million ares, where bonobos are protected. DRC government endorsement of the Bonobo Peace Forest announced at a special press event at the United Nations headquarters. In-situ activites include reserve management, wildlife protecion, and sustainable livelihood initiatives. Long-term bonobo research program at Kokolopori entered its fourth year, now under the auspices of Harvard University.
Awareness & Education: Major focus on raising awareness in the DRC and globally about bonobos and their habitat, growing our base of support, and developing sustainable sources of long-term financing. Celebrated BCIs 20th anniversary and prepared for next phase of development. Launched new website and CMS with in-kind contribution from Perfect Sense/Brightspot, including design, training, and on-going hosting. Year-long partnership with Care2 resulted in tripling the size of BCIs mailing list and vastly increased outreach through a petition authored by actor/activist Ashley Judd, which gained more than 300,000 signatures and was presented to the DRC government. Extensive social media coverage leading up to the UN press conference for the Bonobo Peace Forest. DRC musical icon Werrason produced a new bonobo song and music video celebrating bonobos and urging people not to hunt them, which debuted at UN event.
Consultations in the field and at national government level preparing for range-wide campaign to protect bonobos.
