BRIC Inc serves as the fiscal agent for the Ward 5 Drug Free Coalition where SAMHSA DFC funding is utilized to reduce underage drinking and marijuana use along with other drugs via community level, environmental strategies. The legalization of marijuana for medical use initially and recreational use more recently in DC has resulted in decrease perception of harm among youth which has resulted in a noticeable increase in use by younger youth, further complicating our prevention efforts and messaging. The Coalitions SAMHSA Stop Act grant further supports our youth advocacy development and messaging community campaigns via traditional and social media regarding underage access and alcohol consumption. Our biggest challenge in changing community attitudes about the seriousness and importance of the underage drinking problem is making the connections between youth drinking and the other risk factors that are often viewed as more important, pressing issues but not linked back to youth drinking such as gang and other youth violence, crime, truancy/unemployment, food desserts.

BRIC Inc operates the Wards 7 and 8 DC Prevention Center in direct partnership with the DC Dept of Behavioral Health. Guided by the US Dept of Health evidence based Strategic Prevention Framework public health model, four DC Prevention Centers work together to provide viable and sustainable citywide drug use prevention focused infrastructure. Focusing on youth ages 8 to 18 and their caregivers, we work through extensive neighborhood based and affinity group based prevention networks to empower youth and adult community leaders to learn about the harmful effects and causes of drug use. Our staff supported by our trained youth and adult leaders distributes specific drug access and drug use materials along with leading drug education/capacity building trainings for youth programs, parent, senior groups and faith based groups, civic associations, resident councils and various workplace groups. Continued on schedule O.
