Capital Fringe democratizes art creation, participation and attendance. Connecting exploratory artists with adventurous audiences by creating outlets and spaces for creative, pioneering, and contemporary performance in the District of Columbia.
Fringes cornerstone program is a 20-day Festival that has historical taken place each July in South West DC, showcasing performing artists across all disciplines. Due to the global pandemic Capital Fringe did not produce the 15th Annual Fringe Festival in 2020. The Fringe Festival (the Festival) has nurtured thousands of local artists and expanded the audience base for live performance in DC. Since its inception, Fringe has presented 14 major Festivals featuring over 52,000 participating artists and served 380,000 of ticket buyers. Fringe has generated approximately $2,370,000 in revenue for artists participating in its annual festival. Despite an open-door policy, a significant percentage of Fringe artists and theatre companies produce high-quality work. Many shows are then accepted into the curated Fringe Festivals around the country including, Live Arts in Philadelphia and Orlando Fringe Festival. In 2020 Capital Fringe founded the Down to Earth program in partnership with Friends of the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, a proud partner of the National Park Service and Caandor Labs. Down to Earths goal is to provide earning opportunities to individual artists; bring focus to the Park and the Kenilworth areas past, present, and future by highlighting the stewardship of the natural environment and the intersectionality of systemic racism illustrated through artistic practice and process.Fringe has received numerous awards, not only for its programming but several citations recognizing its organizational strength and contributions to the community. Capital Fringe has been awarded Best Theatre Festival for 2013 through 2020 in Washington City Papers Best of D.C. issues. The organization received the prestigious Mayors Arts Award for Innovation in the Arts in 2007 and the Mayors Arts Award for Excellence in Service to the Arts in 2011. The organization has been featured in the Catalogue of Philanthropy: Greater Washington as an exemplarily local non-profit for the years 2008-2009, 2013-2014, and 2017-2018. theatreWashington presented Capital Fringe with the Helen Hayes Award for Innovative Leadership in Theatre in 2013. In December 2015, the Washington Business Journal named Founding Director, Julianne Brienza CEO Non-Profit of the Year. Fringe was then awarded the Partnership Award from the Downtown DC BID for its creation of the 2015 public art project Dance of the Cranes. In September 2016, Fringe Founding Director was presented with the Visionary Leadership Award at the 30th annual Mayors Arts Award, recognizing the invaluable contribution that the Fringe has made to arts in the District.
