Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Organization inspires and equips people and institutions to care for creation and the poor. Through its national partners, it guides the United States Catholic Churchs response to climate change.
The Organization made significant accomplishments in several areas including education, advocacy and facilities. Regarding education, the Organization published for download two programs for the Earth Day April 22 and the Feast of St. Francis October 4. Constituents downloaded thousands of the programs reaching tens of thousands more individuals. The Organization increased parish-based creation care teams from 200 to 400 and supported their efforts monthly. In addition, a diocesan-based creation care team network was begun with 12 dioceses.
Regarding the advocacy program effort, the Organization worked with its 20 national partners to educate Catholics nationwide about public policy discussions at the state and national levels and encouraged members to provide public witness on these issues by encouraging high level leaders to write op-eds and letters to the editor to local papers that highlight the intersection of Catholic teaching, caring for the environment and environmental policies and regulations. In this way, local policy makers and other community leaders learn about the Catholic framework that could help shape discussions in the public arena.
Regarding the energy program effort, the Organizations Catholic Energies program worked to develop several solar and energy efficiency projects benefiting Catholic institutions. These projects not only helped Catholic-owned properties reduce energy use but they provided an opportunity to help the users of those properties understand Catholic teaching on the environment. In addition, these projects saved utility costs and lowered greenhouse gas emissions in the electric power sector.
