PHI/CDC GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM THE PHI/CDC GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (PHI/CDC), IMPLEMENTED BY THE PUBLIC HEALTH INSTITUTE (PHI), ASSISTS THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC) IN STRENGTHENING THE GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE. IN COLLABORATION WITH CUGH, THE WORLD'S LARGEST CONSORTIUM OF ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS, PHI/CDC IS WORKING TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS, GRADUATES, AND EMERGING PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. THIS FELLOWSHIP EMPHASIZES IN STRENGTHENING CAPACITIES IN EPIDEMIOLOGY, HIV PREVENTION, MONITORING AND EVALUATION, STRATEGIC INFORMATION, PROGRAM MANAGEMENT AND SURVEILLANCE. THROUGH OTHER PROMINENT GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWSHIPS, PHI HAS ESTABLISHED A REPUTATION FOR DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING HIGH QUALITY PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE A MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE TO THEIR PARTICIPANTS. DURING ITS THIRD YEAR UNDER PHI MANAGEMENT, PHI AIMS TO SUPPORT THE CDC IN ITS MISSION TO CREATE A COHORT OF TALENTED PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO CONTRIBUTE IN ACCOMPLISHING THE AGENCIES' WORK AND GOALS.THE UNIVERSITY LIAISON PROGRAM OFFICER REPORTS DIRECTLY TO THE CUGH DEPUTY DIRECTOR AND PARTICIPATES IN REGULAR PROGRAM TEAM MEETINGS AND EVENTS WITH THE PROGRAM MANAGER, ADMINISTRATIVE AND COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT (ACA), AND RECRUITMENT AND FELLOWSHIP SUPPORT COORDINATOR (RFSC) TO ACCOMPLISH OUTREACH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES.GATES FOUNDATION AND CUGH INITIATIVE CUGH SECURED A GRANT FROM THE BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION (BMGF) TO WORK WITH THE US ACADEMIC COMMUNITY TO INCREASE SUPPORT FOR US LEADERSHIP AND FUNDING FOR GLOBAL HEALTH. TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVE, CUGH IS COLLABORATING WITH ITS MEMBERS, AND CEPH-ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS, TO INFORM CONGRESSPERSONS AND STATE LEGISLATORS AS WELL AS THE GENERAL PUBLIC ON THE VALUE OF GLOBAL HEALTH TO THEIR STATE AND THE NATION. AS PART OF THIS PROJECT, CUGH IS CONNECTING ELECTED OFFICIALS WITH ACADEMICS FROM THEIR DISTRICT IN THEIR AREAS OF INTEREST. THIS INITIATIVE WILL HIGHLIGHT THE RETURN ON INVESTMENT TO THE LOCAL AND NATIONAL ECONOMY AS WELL AS INTERNATIONAL SECURITY.THIS INITIATIVE HAS FOUR ELEMENTS:1. TO CULTIVATE GLOBAL HEALTH CHAMPIONS IN CONGRESS AND STATE LEGISLATURES. IN ORDER TO CULTIVATE CHAMPIONS WITHIN GOVERNMENT, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ELECTED OFFICIALS MEET WITH THEIR CONSTITUENTS WHO ARE DIRECTLY IMPACTED BY US LEADERSHIP IN GLOBAL HEALTH. CUGH AIMS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF GLOBAL HEALTH CHAMPIONS THROUGH TWO UPCOMING CAPITOL HILL DAYS (FALL 2019 & SPRING 2020), WHERE ACADEMICS WILL SHARE THEIR STORY ON THE VALUE OF GLOBAL HEALTH AND THE NEED TO PROPERLY FUND THEIR ACTIVITIES.2. TO ESTABLISH A NETWORK OF ACADEMIC ADVISORS (ALSO KNOWN AS THE NAA). THE NAA SERVES TO EDUCATE CONGRESSPERSONS AND STATE LEGISLATORS ON A VARIETY OF GLOBAL HEALTH TOPICS. ULTIMATELY, IF AN ELECTED OFFICIAL IS INTERESTED IN CRAFTING LEGISLATION ON A CERTAIN TOPIC (EX: ZIKA), THEN THE NAA WOULD BE A RESOURCE WHERE ELECTED OFFICIALS WOULD BE PAIRED WITH AN ACADEMIC FROM THEIR DISTRICT WHO SPECIALIZES IN THAT TOPIC AND CAN COLLABORATE ON CREATING A RESEARCH-BASED POLICY.3. SEEK NEW US SUPPORT FOR GLOBAL HEALTH INITIATIVES IN THE US AND INTERNATIONALLY. WITH A RISE IN GLOBAL HEALTH OUTBREAKS, THIS INITIATIVE ALSO SEEKS TO INCREASE ELECTED OFFICIALS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC'S SUPPORT FOR GLOBAL HEALTH INITIATIVES. THROUGH THE TWO AFOREMENTIONED CAPITOL HILL DAYS AS WELL AS THROUGH DIRECT CONTACT WITH OFFICES AND VIA CUGH'S COMMUNICATIONS PLATFORM, ACADEMICS WILL BE ABLE TO PROMOTE GLOBAL HEALTH INITIATIVES TO THEIR OWN MEMBER OF CONGRESS AND HIS OR HER RESPECTIVE STAFF.4. STRENGTHEN ADVOCACY AND COMMUNICATION CAPABILITIES AMONG FACULTY AND STUDENTS IN US ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS. STRONG COMMUNICATION IS ESSENTIAL TO ENSURING THAT AN ACADEMIC'S VOICE IS MOST EFFECTIVELY HEARD IN GOVERNMENT. AS PART OF THIS INITIATIVE, CUGH WILL HOST COMMUNICATION WORKSHOPS AND POST ONLINE, FREE OF COST TRAININGS TO OUR WEBSITE, WHERE ACADEMICS WILL BE ABLE TO STRENGTHEN THEIR COMMUNICATION CAPABILITIES.OVERALL, THIS INITIATIVE AIMS TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND SUPPORT FOR GLOBAL HEALTH PROGRAMS AMONG LEGISLATORS AND THE BROADER PUBLIC AS WELL AS INCREASE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF POLICIES BACKED BY EVIDENCE. CUGH WILL COLLABORATE WITH LIKE-MINDED ORGANIZATIONS IN THESE EFFORTS, BY SHARING WORK AND INCLUDING THEM IN A COMMITTEE.ANNUAL CONFERENCETHE CUGH ANNUAL CONFERENCE HAS BECOME THE WORLD'S LEADING ACADEMIC GLOBAL HEALTH CONFERENCE. SINCE ITS INAUGURAL MEETING IN 2008, THE NUMBER OF REGISTERED ATTENDEES HAS GROWN FROM 327 TO MORE THAN 1,800. THE MEETING BRINGS TOGETHER COMMITTED LEADERS, PROFESSIONALS, EDUCATORS, STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE FIELDS OF STUDY INCLUDING ENGINEERING, BUSINESS, LAW, POLICY, NATURAL SCIENCES, NURSING, PUBLIC HEALTH, MEDICINE, AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES TO EXPLORE, DISCUSS AND CRITICALLY ASSESS THE GLOBAL HEALTH LANDSCAPE.
