Organizations Filed Purposes: To advance food justice and health equity in the nation's capital.

DC Greens connects communities to healthy food in the nation's capital.

Food Access: DC Greens' Food Access programming reflects our belief that access to healthy food is a basic human right. Our Produce Rx program advances a "food as medicine" approach, equipping physicians to prescribe fresh fruits and vegetables to low-income patients coping with chronic disease (diabetes, pre-diabetes, and hypertension). Patients redeem their prescriptions at the Giant pharmacy - the only full-service grocery store in Ward 8 and receive $80 per month to spend in the produce aisle. Another pillar of our food access portfolio is Produce Plus, which we have operated since 2016, providing vouchers for over 25,000 low-income DC residents annually to shop for fresh, local produce at farmers' markets citywide. This program, launched by DC Greens in collaboration with DC Health, has changed the landscape of healthy food access in the city and secured the market for four new farmers' markets to open east of the Anacostia river in the past two years. We employ 7 Market Champions, Produce Plus customers who conduct "community in-reach," promoting and informing the program while working to ensure that market spaces are responsive and welcoming. In 2020, our Food Access programming also included our COVID-19 emergency response: weekly Sunday meal distribution, produce home-delivery for 400 seniors, and 14-day grocery box delivery for food insecure patients who tested positive for COVID-19.

Food Education: DC Greens works closely with the DC Public School System to support improvements in the school cafeteria offerings. Our school support work also focuses on the cafeteria environment, working to improve what is served and strengthening the channels that students and teachers have to provide direct feedback on school food. We are leading the effort to integrate the Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP) in DC Public Schools and organize the School Food Collaborative to democratize decision making in school nutrition programs. DC Greens also supports teachers and garden educators across the city through information sharing and technical assistance.

Urban Agriculture: DC Greens hosts a free, annual Rooting DC conference on urban gardening that provides more than 60 hands-on agricultural workshops to over 1,200 residents from all wards of Washington, DC. Our Urban Agriculture work is also focused around the establishment of a new urban farm in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Ward 8. This site - The Well at Oxon Run - will launch in 2021.
