GRANTS AND HEALTHCARE: THE ESSENTIAL HOSPITAL INSTITUTE ("INSTITUTE") CONTINUED TO ADDRESS THE SIGNIFICANT ISSUES FACING PUBLIC HOSPITALS, SAFETY NET ORGANIZATIONS, UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES, AND RELATED HEALTH POLICY ISSUES OF NATIONAL PRIORITY. THE INSTITUTE'S GRANT-SUPPORTED RESEARCH EXPANDS INSTITUTIONAL KNOWLEDGE ON TOPICS RELATED TO POPULATION HEALTH, PATIENT-CENTERED CARE AND RESEARCH, QUALITY PERFORMANCE AND IMPROVEMENT, LEADERSHIP, AND HEALTH REFORM IMPLEMENTATION. THE INSTITUTE COMPLETED ITS GRANT PROJECT WITH THE ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION (RWJF) TO HELP ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS MOVE BEYOND THEIR WALLS TO INFLUENCE THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS THAT IMPACT HEALTH. IN 2019, THE INSTITUTE COMPLETED AND DISSEMINATED FINAL PRODUCTS, INCLUDING A BRIEF AND ACCOMPANYING WEBINAR SHOWCASING ESSENTIAL HOSPITAL EFFORTS TO ALLEVIATE TRANSPORTATION BARRIERS. THE INSTITUTE COMPLETED ITS GRANT PROJECT WITH RWJF TO DEVELOP A SEARCHABLE ONLINE LIBRARY OF RESOURCES FOR FACILITATING CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN PATIENTS AND CLINICIANS ABOUT THE COST OF CARE; HOST WEBINARS HIGHLIGHTING THE TOOLS; ADMINISTER MINI-GRANTS TO TEST OR EXPAND UPON THE RESOURCES, AND MARKET THE RESOURCES. IN 2019, THE INSTITUTE MANAGED THE COMPLETION OF THE MINI-GRANT PROJECTS AND DISSEMINATED THE MINI-GRANT FINAL PRODUCTS AND PRESENTED THEM AT VITAL. (MAY 1, 2018-SEPT 30, 2019) THE INSTITUTE COMPLETED ITS WORK WITH THE PATIENT-CENTERED OUTCOMES RESEARCH INSTITUTE (PCORI) UNDER SUBCONTRACT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY, WHERE THE INSTITUTE SERVED AS A PROJECT ACHIEVE ENGAGEMENT PARTNER. IN 2019, INTERVIEWS WITH HOSPITAL LEADERS HELPED TO IDENTIFY CARE TRANSITION STRATEGIES MOST RELEVANT TO PROVIDERS, CAREGIVERS, AND PATIENTS. THE INSTITUTE CONTINUED ITS WORK WITH THE KRESGE FOUNDATION ON POPULATION HEALTH IMPROVEMENT AND ITS ADDITIONAL GRANT TO IDENTIFY RECOMMENDATIONS TO MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE AND BUILD CLIMATE RESILIENCE FOR HOSPITALS. AS PART OF THIS LATTER PROJECT, THE INSTITUTE CONDUCTED A SURVEY, INTERVIEWS WITH 17 HOSPITAL STAFF RESPONSIBLE FOR FACILITIES AND SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS, AND A FORUM WITH HOSPITAL LEADERSHIP AT VITAL 2019. THE INSTITUTE CONTINUED ITS GRANT FROM THE RWJF TO GENERATE NEW INFORMATION FOR SAFETY-NET HOSPITAL LEADERS SEEKING TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN TRUST AMONG VULNERABLE POPULATIONS. IN 2019, THE INSTITUTE COMPLETED A PANEL SURVEY OF 1,000 PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS SEEN AT ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS TO IDENTIFY THE MOST CRITICAL DIMENSIONS OF TRUST AND CONDUCTED THREE SITE VISITS AT MEMBER HOSPITALS TO ASCERTAIN POLICIES AND PRACTICES LEADERS CAN IMPLEMENT TO BUILD PATIENTS' INSTITUTIONAL TRUST. THE INSTITUTE BEGAN AND COMPLETED A PROJECT FUNDED BY RWJF TO EVALUATE THE INSTITUTE'S WORK TO HELP ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS ADVANCE POPULATION HEALTH BY ADDRESSING SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH. BASED ON THE RESULTS, THE INSTITUTE DEVELOPED A SUBSEQUENT ROUND OF PROGRAMMING AND CONTINUED EDUCATING AND DISSEMINATING RESOURCES TO MAINTAIN THE MOMENTUM GENERATED BY PRIOR WORK. THE CENTERS FOR MEDICARE & MEDICAID SERVICES SELECTED THE INSTITUTE AS A PRIME AWARDEE OF THE NETWORK OF QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND INNOVATION CONTRACTOR (NQIIC). THIS DESIGNATION WILL ALLOW NQIIC AWARDEES TO BID ON OPPORTUNITIES OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. THESE AWARDS WILL FOCUS ON QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT, SUPPORT INNOVATIONS IN HEALTH CARE, AND SUPPORT HIGH-VALUE CARE.

RESEARCH: THE INSTITUTE PUBLISHED SIX REPORTS IN 2019:- THE STATE OF CLIMATE RESILIENCE AND CLIMATE MITIGATION EFFORTS AT ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS, NOV. 2019- POPULATION HEALTH LEADERSHIP AT ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS: A TOOLKIT FOR HIRING AND EVALUATING POPULATION HEALTH EXECUTIVES, MAR. 2019- RESEARCH BRIEF - PATIENT EXPERIENCE AND HCAHPS AT ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS, OCT. 2019- ESSENTIAL DATA: OUR HOSPITALS, OUR PATIENTS - RESULTS OF AMERICA'S ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS 2017 ANNUAL MEMBER CHARACTERISTICS SURVEY, APR. 2019 - OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL WALLS: AN UPDATE ON ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS' EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THEIR COMMUNITIES, DEC. 2019- MILESTONES FOR COMMUNITY-INTEGRATED CARE AT ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS, DEC. 2019 IN ADDITION, THE INSTITUTE DISSEMINATED FINDINGS FROM RESEARCH AT NATIONAL CONFERENCES, INCLUDING PANEL AND POSTER PRESENTATIONS.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION: TO HELP SAFETY-NET HOSPITALS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS CONTINUE THEIR SUCCESS IN SERVING THEIR COMMUNITIES, THE INSTITUTE OFFERED AN ARRAY OF EDUCATIONAL AND MEMBER SERVICES. THESE INCLUDED WEBINARS, CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS, DISTANCE LEARNING EVENTS, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE VIA CONFERENCE CALLS AND WEBINARS. THESE PROGRAMS PROVIDED FORUMS FOR MEMBERS TO LEARN AND EXCHANGE IDEAS ON HOW SAFETY-NET HOSPITALS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS CAN ADDRESS NEW ISSUES AND CHALLENGES, IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING VITAL PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS AND LEADERSHIP EXPERTISE. THE FELLOWS PROGRAM IS A 12-MONTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR RISING SENIOR LEADERS IN SIGNIFICANT CLINICAL OR ADMINISTRATIVE ROLES AT MEMBER HOSPITALS. THE PURPOSE OF THE FELLOWS PROGRAM IS TO EDUCATE PARTICIPANTS ON ISSUES THAT IMPACT ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS AND PROVIDE THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO LEAD STRATEGICALLY AND ADVOCATE FOR POLICIES AND RESOURCES THAT PROMOTE THE HEALTH OF VULNERABLE PATIENTS. EACH CLASS INCLUDES THREE HIGHLY INTERACTIVE SESSIONS (2.5 DAYS EACH), A SELF-ASSESSMENT, PROJECT, SITE VISIT, DISTANCE LEARNING, NETWORKING, AND ATTENDANCE AT AMERICA'S ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS' CONFERENCES AND EVENTS. THE ESSENTIAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP ACADEMY IS A 10-MONTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DESIGNED TO BUILD A COMMUNITY OF CONFIDENT AND EMPOWERED WOMEN EXECUTIVES. THE LATTER LEAD ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS IN MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF OUR NATION'S MOST VULNERABLE POPULATIONS. IT INCLUDES THREE HIGHLY INTERACTIVE SESSIONS, A SELF-ASSESSMENT, EXECUTIVE COACHING, MONTHLY CHECK-IN CALLS WITH THEIR MENTOR, A SITE VISIT TO THEIR MENTOR'S ORGANIZATION, AND NETWORKING. ALL THE MENTORS ARE WOMEN CHIEF EXECUTIVES AT ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS. THROUGH AN AMERICA'S ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS MEMBER BENEFIT, THE INSTITUTE MANAGED SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MEMBERS TO ATTEND VIRTUAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS. IN 2019, 36 STAFF FROM MEMBER HOSPITALS PARTICIPATED IN FOUR VIRTUAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS FROM THE INSTITUTE FOR HEALTHCARE IMPROVEMENT: - 20 STAFF ATTENDED ADVANCED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS;- 13 STAFF ATTENDED THE NATIONAL FORUM; - TWO STAFF ATTENDED THE SUMMIT ON IMPROVING PATIENT CARE; AND - ONE STAFF ATTENDED THE PATIENT SAFETY CONGRESS. AS PART OF A GRANT FROM THE KRESGE FOUNDATION, THE INSTITUTE CONDUCTED TWO WEBINARS ON POPULATION HEALTH AND LEADERSHIP. AS PART OF A GRANT FROM RWJF, THE INSTITUTE CONDUCTED A WEBINAR ON DIMENSIONS OF PATIENT TRUST IN ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS. AS PART OF A SEPARATE RWJF GRANT, THE INSTITUTE DEVELOPED AND DELIVERED A NEW COMPONENT FOR THE LONGSTANDING FELLOWS LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, FOCUSED ON POPULATION HEALTH.
