STATE REFORM PROGRAM: IN 2019, THE EVERY VOICE GOVERNING BOARD DECIDED TO STREAMLINE ITS OPERATIONS AND CONCENTRATE ON SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF STATE AND LOCAL GROUPS TO ADVOCATE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF MAKING THE PRACTICE OF DEMOCRACY MORE INCLUSIVE AND RESPONSIVE. EVERY VOICE, ACCORDINGLY, BECAME HOME TO A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT INCLUDING SIX NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WITH LOCAL AFFILIATES OR PARTNERS. NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS COLLABORATING IN THIS EFFORT INCLUDED THE CENTER FOR POPULAR DEMOCRACY, PLANNED PARENTHOOD, DEMOS, NAACP, THE WORKING FAMILIES ORGANIZATION, AND STATE VOICES. THE BOARD ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES OF SEVERAL OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS AND DECIDED TO FOCUS ITS PROGRAM WORK ON IDENTIFYING AND SUPPORTING LOCAL AND STATE ENTITIES IN THEIR DEMOCRACY REFORM INITIATIVES. THIS SUPPORT TOOK THE FORM OF GRANTS MADE TO SUCH ENTITIES COMBINED WITH STRATEGIC COUNSEL AND ENCOURAGEMENT, WITH SERVICES PROVIDED PRIMARILY THROUGH CONSULTANTS IN THE INTEREST OF MINIMIZING OVERHEAD. MUCH OF 2019 WAS SPENT IN EDUCATING ALLIES AND SUPPORTERS ABOUT THE SHIFT IN FOCUS. WE ALSO BEGAN THE PROCESS OF GRANTMAKING TO LOCAL GROUPS, AWARDING $80,000 TO A DEMOCRACY REFORM EFFORT IN ALBUQUERQUE.
RESEARCH AND POLICY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: EVERY VOICE CONDUCTED A NONPARTISAN POLLING PROJECT, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LAKE RESEARCH, TO ASSESS THE INTEREST OF ARIZONA RESIDENTS IN REFORMS TO THEIR ELECTION RULES THAT COULD INCREASE EVERYDAY CITIZENS' PARTICIPATION AND IMPACT IN LOCAL AND STATE ELECTIONS.
COMMUNICATIONS: DURING 2019, EVERY VOICE CONTINUED MODEST OUTREACH VIA EMAIL TO ITS ONLINE COMMUNITY OF MORE THAN 100,000 SUBSCRIBERS, PARTICULARLY AROUND THE PASSAGE OF HR 1, AN OMNIBUS DEMOCRACY REFORM BILL, PASSED IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES EARLY IN 2019.
