Organizations Filed Purposes: TO PROMOTE NON-PARTISAN REFORM IN THE FUNDING PROCESS FOR POLITICAL ELECTIONS.

TO PROMOTE NON-PARTISAN REFORM IN THE PRACTICE OF DEMOCRACY.

OUTREACH: IN 2019, THE EVERY VOICE CENTER GOVERNING BOARD DECIDED TO STREAMLINE ITS OPERATIONS AND CONCENTRATE ON SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF STATE AND LOCAL GROUPS TO ADVOCATE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF MAKING THE PRACTICE OF DEMOCRACY MORE INCLUSIVE AND RESPONSIVE. OUR MOST TIME-CONSUMING AND LABOR-INTENSIVE EFFORTS IN 2019 CONCERNED THE PROCESS OF ENGAGING APPROPRIATE STAKEHOLDER ORGANIZATIONS AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL AND BUILDING A CONSENSUS AMONG THEM. THE CONSULTING TEAM THAT CONDUCTED THIS INTENSIVE ORGANIZING AND OUTREACH EFFORT INCLUDED SEVERAL FORMER EVC STAFF MEMBERS BY MID-YEAR, EVC HAD BECOME HOME TO A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT INCLUDING SIX NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WITH LOCAL AFFILIATES OR PARTNERS. NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS COLLABORATING IN THIS EFFORT INCLUDED THE CENTER FOR POPULAR DEMOCRACY, PLANNED PARENTHOOD, DEMOS, NAACP, THE WORKING FAMILIES ORGANIZATION, AND STATE VOICES. THE BOARD ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES OF SEVERAL OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS AND DECIDED TO FOCUS ITS PROGRAM WORK ON IDENTIFYING AND SUPPORTING LOCAL AND STATE ENTITIES IN THEIR DEMOCRACY REFORM INITIATIVES AROUND THE HIGHEST PRIORITY NEEDS IN VARIOUS STATES AND LOCATIONS. SURVEYING THE LANDSCAPE OF DEMOCRACY ACTIVISM TO BEGIN TO IDENTIFY AND ENGAGE APPROPRIATE LOCAL PARTNERS AND GRANTEES CONSUMED CONSIDERABLE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES OVER THE BALANCE OF 2019.

STATE REFORM PROGRAM: IN 2019, THIS SUPPORT TOOK THE FORM OF GRANTS, STRATEGIC COUNSEL, AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO GRASSROOTS ALLIES. EVC PROVIDED SUCH SUPPORT PRIMARILY THROUGH CONSULTANTS IN THE INTEREST OF MINIMIZING OVERHEAD. WE SPECIFICALLY BEGAN THE PROCESS OF GRANTMAKING TO LOCAL GROUPS BY AWARDING $110,000 TO DEMOCRACY REFORM EFFORTS IN ARIZONA, FLORIDA AND NEW YORK. WE ALSO SUCCESSFULLY PERSUADED OTHER DONORS, INCLUDING NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS, TO MAKE DIRECT CONTRIBUTIONS TO OTHER LOCAL GROUPS PURSUING DEMOCRACY REFORM AGENDAS.

COMMUNICATIONS: DURING 2019, THE EVC TEAM AND BOARD MEMBERS DEVOTED CONSIDERABLE EFFORT TO EDUCATING ALLIES AND SUPPORTERS ABOUT THE SHIFT IN THE ORGANIZATION'S APPROACH AND EXPANDED STAKEHOLDER COMMUNITY. ALTHOUGH MOST ACTIVITY WAS CONDUCTED THROUGH INFORMAL BRIEFINGS OR ONE-TO-ONE CONTACTS, EVERY VOICE CENTER ALSO CONTINUED MODEST OUTREACH VIA EMAIL TO ITS ONLINE COMMUNITY.
