Fihankra Akoma Ntoaso (FAN)'s mission is to cultivate a focus on the well-being and positive development of youth in an environment infused with safety, security and love. FAN currently operates DC's first Youth Peer Operated Center, serving youth who have had contact, or are at risk of contact, with the child welfare system and their families.
FAN's mission is to be a youth-centered community of safe places and linked hearts. We successfully launched a social emotional afterschool and summer programming for 29 youth participants. We were able to pivot successfully to virtual programming once COVID-19 impacted in-person services. We provided 42 tablets to FANmilies helping youth participants to stay connected and also linked youth participants to virtual tutors. To ensure youth participants stayed fed and had access to food, we served as an emergency food distribution site, which provided 5,000 meals that kept 60 of our FANmilies fed during the beginning phases of the pandemic. We partnered with LETS Go Boys and Girls to introduce STEM to 23 participants.
FAN connected with a total of 254 people. FAN provided 82 forms of assistance to 18 Alumni participants to include mental health check-ins. We recruited 2 Alumni participants to serve on FANs Board of Directors and employed 3 Alumni participants throughout the year to support programming. One alumni participant leveraged her position as a recovery coach and FAN employee to land a job at GW hospital as recovery coach expert. We provided direct services to 12 Alumni participants in forms of transportation, food, clothing, essential items, and furniture. In addition, we conducted monthly supervised visitation with Alumni participant and son which helped to begin the reunification process. We hosted a virtual recovery coach training for 23 participants, and 6 family events and 3 Alumni events. FAN had 2 Alumni participants graduate from high school and 1 from college.
