Organizations Filed Purposes: THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF WASHINTON, D.C. IS A COMMUNITY-SUPPORTED ORGANIZATION THAT COLLECTS, INTERPRETS, AND SHARES THE HISTORY OF OUR NATION'S CAPITAL. FOUNDED IN 1894, IT SERVES A DIVERSE AUDIENCE THROUGH ITS COLLECTIONS, PUBLIC PROGRAMS, EXHIBITIONS & PUBLICATIONS.

COLLECTS, PRESERVES, AND SHARES THE HISTORY OF D.C.'S INHABITANTS, COMMUNITIES, AND BUSINESSES

EXHIBITIONS: THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS PUBLIC EXHIBITIONS TO MAKE LOCAL HISTORY AND CULTURE ACCESSIBLE TO A BROAD AUDIENCE, AND TO HELP PROMOTE A SENSE OF IDENTITY, PLACE AND PRIDE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. IN AUGUST 2017 THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED EXHIBITS AND LIBRARY SERVICES TO ACCOMMODATE A MAJOR RESTORATION OF THE CARNEGIE LIBRARY BUILDING. THE BUILDING REOPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN MAY 2019 AND EXHIBITIONS RESUMED IN THE RESTORED SPACE, NOTABLY THE BIG PICTURE - PANORAMIC PHOTOS OF THE CITY'S PEOPLE - AND THE HALL OF HISTORY, WHICH INCLUDES A TIMELINE OF MAJOR EVENTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF WASHINGTON, D.C. DURING THE INTERIM PERIOD OF RESTORATION, HISTORICAL SOCIETY EXHIBITS AND OTHER SERVICES WERE PRESENTED AT ALTERNATIVE VENUES, INCLUDING THE NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM, GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY MUSEUM AND THE NEWSEUM.

LIBRARY AND COLLECTIONS: THE KIPLINGER RESEARCH LIBRARY IS AT THE CORE OF THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION TO COLLECT, PRESERVE, AND SHARE MATERIALS CHRONICLING THE CITY'S HISTORY. ITS VAST COLLECTIONS INCLUDE THOUSANDS OF BOOKS, MANUSCRIPTS, ARTWORK, HISTORICAL MAPS, PHOTOGRAPHS, PRINTS, AND AN UNPARALLELED COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL PAMPHLETS, REPORTS, VERTICAL FILES AND EPHEMERA. THESE COLLECTIONS ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO RESEARCHERS, STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND ARE THE BASIS FOR OUR PUBLIC PROGRAMMING AND EXHIBITS. IN MAY OF 2019, SOME PUBLIC PROGRAMMING AND SERVICES RETURNED TO THE NEWLY RESTORED CARNEGIE LIBRARY BUILDING, AND IN AUGUST 2019 THE KIPLINGER RESEARCH LIBRARY RESUMED FULL SERVICES. OUR SCHOLARLY PUBLICATION, WASHINGTON HISTORY, FEATURED THE RESTORATION IN ITS FALL 2018 ISSUE, AND NEXT PUBLISHED A SPECIAL COMBINED ISSUE OF NEW RESEARCH IN FALL 2019.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS: THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTS PUBLIC EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT INTERPRET AND PROVIDE ACCESS TO WASHINGTON HISTORY. THESE INCLUDE AUTHOR AND LECTURE SERIES, BOOK SIGNINGS, TOURS, RESEARCH WORKSHOPS, AND COMMEMORATIONS OF SIGNIFICANT EVENTS AND PEOPLE IN LOCAL HISTORY. PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND CULTURAL CENTERS ALSO FOSTER STRENGTHEN COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMMING IN 2019, PROGRAM OFFERINGS INCLUDED WORKSHOPS ON GENEALOGY, HOUSE HISTORIES, HISTORY OF HOME RULE, BOOK RELEASE PANELS, AND A SERIES OF "HISTORY HUNT" INTERACTIVE VISITS TO THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOR DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS.
