ILSI NORTH AMERICA IS A NON-PROFIT SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATION THAT ADVANCES FOOD SAFETY AND NUTRITION SCIENCE FOR THE BENEFIT OF PUBLIC HEALTH. WE BRING TOGETHER SCIENTISTS FROM THE U.S. AND CANADIAN GOVERNMENTS, ACADEMIA, AND INDUSTRY TO WORK COOPERATIVELY AND WITH SHARED RESPONSIBILITY TO ADVANCE FOOD SAFETY AND NUTRITION SCIENCE FOR THE BENEFIT OF PUBLIC HEALTH.
ILSI NORTH AMERICA IS A UNIQUE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION BASED IN WASHINGTON, DC, THAT PROVIDES A FORUM FOR ACADEMIC, GOVERNMENT, AND INDUSTRY SCIENTISTS TO IDENTIFY IMPORTANT NUTRITION AND FOOD SAFETY ISSUES THROUGH ITS PROGRAMS. ILSI NORTH AMERICA CONTRIBUTES TO AN IMPROVED SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF THOSE ISSUES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC. ILSI NORTH AMERICA ADDRESSES IMPORTANT FOOD, NUTRITION, AND WELLNESS TOPICS THROUGH COMMITTEES THAT FOCUS ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF DIET, NUTRITION, AND HEALTH PROMOTION. ILSI NORTH AMERICA HELPS DEVELOP AND DISSEMINATE SCIENCE RELATED TO FOOD SAFETY, INCLUDING TOXICOLOGY, MICROBIOLOGY, AND PACKAGING ISSUES.
THE ILSI NORTH AMERICA SODIUM COMMITTEE DEVELOPS APPLIED SCIENCE TO ADDRESS LONG-STANDING QUESTIONS ABOUT SODIUM AND RELATED NUTRIENTS AND CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH. GIVEN THIS PARTICULARLY DIVISIVE NUTRIENT, THE COMMITTEE ALSO FOCUSES ON FOSTERING DISCUSSIONS ACROSS STAKEHOLDERS FROM ALL SECTORS TO PROMOTE THE UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL UNDERPINNINGS. THE COMMITTEE ADVANCED SEVERAL ACTIVITIES IN 2019 INCLUDING: MOVING THE NEEDLE ON HYPERTENSION: WHAT KNOWLEDGE IS NEEDED? EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY 2019 SESSION AND PUBLICATION; UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF POTASSIUM-BASED SODIUM REPLACERS ON INTAKES OF BOTH POTASSIUM AND SODIUM; UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE NA:K RATIO OF THE DIET AND BLOOD PRESSURE: GENERATING HUMAN DATA; AND THE ART AND SCIENCE OF SODIUM REDUCTION: GUIDING PRINCIPLES. MORE INFORMATION ON THESE ACTIVITIES CAN BE FOUND ON THE ILSI NORTH AMERICA WEBSITE.
THE ILSI NORTH AMERICA FOOD AND CHEMICAL SAFETY COMMITTEE IS RECOGNIZED AS A SCIENTIFIC LEADER IN FOOD AND CHEMICAL SAFETY RESEARCH AND HAS MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN TOXICOLOGY AND RISK ASSESSMENT TO ADVANCE THE SCIENCE OF FOOD SAFETY AND IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH. NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATIONS CONTINUE TO UTILIZE THE STRONG SCIENCE PROVIDED BY THE COMMITTEE TO ADDRESS RESEARCH GAPS AND DEVELOP FUTURE RESEARCH. THE COMMITTEE ADVANCED SEVERAL PROJECTS IN 2019: EVALUATION OF THE DOSE-RESPONSE FOR PEANUT ALLERGEN; METAL DIETARY EXPOSURE SCREENING TOOL; ASSESSING HUMAN HEALTH IMPACTS OF GLOBAL ADOPTION OF CODEX DEOXYNIVALENOL (DON) GUIDELINES; SIMULATING LARGE-NUMBER BULK-PRODUCT SAMPLING TO IMPROVE FOOD SAFETY SAMPLING PLANS; AND NEXT GENERATION RISK ASSESSMENT: DATABASE OF "CURATED FOOD RELEVANT CHEMICALS IN TOXCAST". MORE INFORMATION ON THESE ACTIVITIES CAN BE FOUND ON THE ILSI NORTH AMERICA WEBSITE.
THE ILSI NORTH AMERICA ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING FEATURED A SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM AND DISCUSSIONS OF CURRENT EMERGING SCIENCE TOPICS THE ORGANIZATION COULD CONSIDER ADDRESSING THROUGH ITS SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS. ILSI NORTH AMERICA ORGANIZED A SERIES OF SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: NOVEL FOODS AND THE FUTURE: OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES AND EXPLORING THE PATH FORWARD FOR NEW TECHNOLOGIES; FOOD PROCESSING & FOOD WASTE: STATE OF TECHNOLOGY; AND HOW CAN NEW TECHNOLOGY IMPACT RESEARCH STUDIES? BECAUSE ILSI NORTH AMERICA'S ANNUAL MEETING IS HELD TOGETHER WITH THAT OF OTHER ILSI ENTITIES, THE MEETING ALSO PROVIDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH COLLEAGUES FROM ILSI ENTITIES WORLDWIDE.
